TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - State Sen. Geraldine Thompson died following complications from knee replacement surgery on Thursday, according to her family.

Sen. Geraldine Thompson was 76.

"Senator Thompson's passing is a profound loss for the Senate. Her watched eye, cheerful smile, and thoughtful, well-researched, and spirited debate will be greatly missed," Senate President Ben Albritton said in a statement. "Senator Thompson was a wealth of knowledge on many subjects, but I truly appreciate her passion for education.

"In addition to the remarkable legacy she leaves behind through her family, Senator Thompson also leaves behind her passion project, the Wells' Built Museum of African American History and Culture, which continues to serve as a wonderful tribute to the contributions of African Americans to the Orlando-area, our state, and our nation," Albritton added.

An Orlando-area Democrat, Thompson most recently served in the Senate since 2022. She also served in the chamber from 2012-2016.

Thompson started in the Florida Legislature in the House from 2006-2012. She also served in the chamber again from 2018-2022.

"It's truly hard to believe she won't be with us when we gavel in for the Regular Session in two weeks," Albritton added.

Thompson served as vice chair on the Appropriations Committee on Pre-K-12 Education. In addition, she served on the Education Postsecondary; Education Pre-K-12; Fiscal Policy; Judiciary; Military and Veterans Affairs; Space, and Domestic Security; and the Rules committees.

"I know the prayers of the entire Senate family are with Judge Thompson as well as their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as they mourn this tragic and unexpected loss," Albritton continued.  "Senator Thompson was a woman of great faith. While we mourn the loss of our colleague Senator Thompson, I am also rejoicing for my friend, Geri, who I know this very night is resting at peace in the loving arms of her Savior."
