You should write about the ending since this movie is confusing! The film takes place across three layers. All the characters from the Asylum layer are here, but now they have new roles. Babydoll and her fellow inmates are now dancers working for Blue Oscar Isaac , an orderly in the Asylum layer. In order to escape, she needs five items—a map, fire, a knife, a key, and a mysterious something else. To obtain these items, she diverts the attention of the men by dancing. So to ride back up the layers, the dances create opportunities to get the items. Is it coming from our narrator, Sweet Pea Abbie Cornish? The idea is that women are turned into sex objects forced to perform for male gratification, and this extends from a literal performance in the club to a metaphorical performance of modern movie mores. When we see women in skimpy outfits killing a bunch of orcs or steam-powered zombies, the male viewer remains complicit in that objectification and gratification.
It is Snyder's first film based on an original concept. As she collects the items she needs to escape, she enters another level of fantasy in which the women become strong, experienced warriors. Each fantasy is a parallel to the events in the brothel. Carla Gugino plays Dr. Vera Gorski, a psychiatrist whom Babydoll imagines as Madame Gorski, a choreographer at the strip club. Oscar Isaac plays Blue Jones, the asylum's orderly; in Babydoll's mind he's the brothel's corrupt owner. In the s, a young woman nicknamed Babydoll is institutionalized by her abusive widowed stepfather at the fictional Lennox House for the Mentally Insane in Brattleboro , Vermont , after he accuses her of her younger sister's death. He bribes asylum orderly Blue Jones to forge the signature of the asylum's psychiatrist, Vera Gorski, to have Babydoll lobotomized so she cannot inform authorities of the true circumstances of her sister's death. During her admission to the institution, Babydoll takes note of four items that she would need to attempt an escape.

Look back at the leading ladies of the s who made their mark with iconic roles and some major hairstyles, too. See the gallery. A young girl, Babydoll, is locked away in a mental asylum by her abusive stepfather, where she will undergo a lobotomy in five days' time. Faced with unimaginable odds, she retreats to a fantastical world in her imagination where she and four other female asylum inmates plot to escape the facility. The line between reality and fantasy blurs as Babydoll and the others, plus a mysterious guide, fight to retrieve the five items that will let them break free from their captors in time.
