State Rep. Hillary Cassel (R) recently announced that she was departing from the Democratic Party to join the Republican Party. The Florida lawmaker is the latest official to leave the Democratic Party, citing a disillusionment with the party’s focus and platform. Florida Republicans have welcomed state Rep. Cassel with open arms, and President-elect Donald Trump (R) is now encouraging other “Disillusioned Democrats” to join the GOP.
In a statement released on social media, the newly enlisted Republican announced that she had made the decision to switch parties after much thought and consideration.
She noted “a deep sense of responsibility to my constituents and my commitment to the values that guide my service,” adding that her reason for ditching the Democratic Party and joining the GOP was because of the Republican Party’s “vision for a better, more prosperous Florida.”
Interestingly, data shows that the sunshine state was the number 1 tourist state in the country last year, reporting a lucrative economy and investments galore.
President-elect Trump took to social media to congratulate state Rep. Cassel and also encourage other Democrats like her to join the GOP.

“Congratulations to Hillary Cassel for becoming the second State Representative from the Great State of Florida to switch her Party affiliation from Democrat to Republican, once mor expanding the GOP Supermajority in the State House!,” he wrote on social media.
"I would further like to invite other Disillusioned Democrats to switch Parties, and join us on this noble quest to Save our County and, Make America Great – GREATER THAN EVER BEFORE," the president-elect concluded.
In her statement, state Rep. Cassel outlined key issues that drove her to switch parties. Namely, she mentioned that she’s been “increasingly troubled” by the Democratic Party’s failure to appeal to voters.
Despite joining a party where she knows she’ll have disagreements, state Rep. Cassel maintains that she “will always have input, collaboration, and respect” from the GOP.
