Lay off my Coke! In the latest polling from Public Opinion Strategies, a majority of Americans, including Trump voters, support the usage of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, commonly referred to as food stamps) for soft drinks, including those sweetened with sugar. Changing this policy has been a focal point not just for Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., but also for another Trump appointee, Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Granted, Secretary Rubio doesn't appear to be super focused on the issue as of now in his role in the State Department, it is one of RFK Jr.'s priorities. In September, RFK Jr wrote this in an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal.

"Stop allowing beneficiaries of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program to use their food stamps to buy soda or processed foods. Nine percent of all SNAP funding goes to sweetened drinks, according to 2011 data," Kennedy wrote. "It's nonsensical for U.S. taxpayers to spend tens of billions of dollars subsidizing junk that harms the health of low-income Americans."

Moreover, in May of 2023, while he was still a senator, Rubio introduced a bill, the Healthy SNAP Act, to eliminate junk food from food stamps and “make diet quality a primary objective of the SNAP program,” as 20% of the program’s purchases are junk food and unhealthy beverages, according to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

SNAP

Not only did Rubio believe that cutting sweets from food stamps would be more conscious of taxpayers in the short term, but it would also “in the long run, reduce medical expenses.”

However, despite a majority of Americans voting for President Donald Trump, it appears the citizens of the United States do not want "Big Brother" deciding how to spend their tax dollars.

An argument can be made for the idea that the taxpayers are funding unhealthy habits and stress on the healthcare system, as RFK Jr. and Rubio have pointed out.

But, not a single majority of any demographic from the polling suggests that Americans have a problem with their tax dollars going toward the less fortunate to buy sweets. The overall polling showed nearly 2 to 1 support for this notion.

At the same time, the United States is a representative republic, and the American people voted to put RFK Jr and Rubio in charge. If every issue was left up to the American people, then it would not, in fact, be a republic, but a pure democracy. However, if RFK Jr. wants to win on this issue in the court of public opinion, then polling suggests that the HHS will have some work to do in the communication sphere.

It doesn't appear that this issue will be set in stone any time soon.

Nearly two decades before becoming President Donald Trump's Secretary of State, then-Speaker of the Florida House Marco Rubio laid the groundwork for Gov. Ron DeSantis' newest goal—eliminating property taxes—in 2007.

Though Rubio, a rising star in Florida politics, failed to get his plan across the finish line, he helped pave the way for a 2008 constitutional amendment capping increases in property values for homesteaded homes—and for a renewed push by DeSantis 18 years later.

"People are being taxed to high heaven with property taxes, which...we're gonna give relief on," DeSantis said at an Ocala press conference earlier this week, reiterating the need to provide financial relief to Florida homeowners."They have to cut a check to the government every year, just basically paying rent to live on their own property."

Secretary Rubio, then a young state representative on his way to the U.S. Senate, first proposed eliminating property taxes in 2007 as part of his "100 Innovative Ideas for Florida's Future" book, a set of big plans he compiled ahead of his speakership and would hand out to colleagues.

But property tax elimination is tricky, particularly in a state with no income tax. Nonetheless, Rubio envisioned what lawmakers termed "the Swap": replacing surging property taxes with sales tax. The issue? It would require that the party of low taxes vote to raise one tax to lower another.

And though it was alluring, especially considering Floridians' overall property tax burden had doubled from $15 billion in 2001 to $30 billion in 2007, the Florida Legislature nixed his plan in favor of a more moderate constitutional amendment supported by then-Gov. Charlie Crist, which doubled the property tax exemptions. Voters approved it on the ballot a year later.

But now, 18 years later, DeSantis is revisiting Rubio's idea. DeSantis over the past few weeks has repeatedly signaled his intention to strike property taxes altogether, which would make Florida the first in the nation to do so.

Last week, Republican Sen. Jonathan Martin, a DeSantis ally, filed a bill for the upcoming legislative session ordering a study on eliminating property taxes.

And, just as Rubio had suggested, it asks that property tax revenues be replaced with sales tax or budget cuts.

According to the Florida Policy Institute, a nonpartisan think tank, fully striking all property taxes would require Florida to almost double the sales tax, a move DeSantis has sworn to veto.

And while it remains to be seen what the finer points in his plan are, the Florida governor has promised that property tax elimination will be on the ballot.

"There's gonna be something on the ballot [in 2026] that is going to give Floridians an opportunity to vote themselves relief from property taxes have done to them," DeSantis promised on Tuesday. According to Housingwire.com, the median property tax in Florida increased 47.5% between 2019 and 2024, with South Florida counties like Miami-Dade and Broward seeing nearly 57% increases.

Rubio served in the state House from 2000 until 2008, spending his final two years as the Florida Speaker. He was elected to the U.S. Senate two years later and would stay there until Jan. 2025, when he resigned his seat to become the next Secretary of State. DeSantis appointed Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to fill his shoes days later before swearing in his former Chief of Staff James Uthmeier to succeed Moody.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier on Thursday filed a class-action lawsuit against the retail corporation Target for defrauding investors and "sexualizing children" in one of his first acts as the state's chief prosecutor.

Uthmeier, sworn into the post on Monday, claimed that Target purposely misled investors by failing to disclose that its 2023 Pride campaign, complete with rainbow clothing and trans-friendly swimwear, would be controversial enough to drop the company's stock price.

"While Target told their investors they would keep the company out of controversy to protect the stock price, the retailer engaged in a marketing campaign targeting and sexualizing children," said Uthmeier in a video posted to social media minutes after the class action was filed. "This radical campaign predictably caused Target's stock price to plummet, wiping out $10 billion in market value in just 10 days."

The suit was filed by the Florida State Board of Administration, the agency in charge of retirement pensions, and America First Legal, a nonprofit conservative group founded by President Donald Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller. It alleges that Target violated the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 by failing to disclose "known risks" of customer backlash to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. It also claims that Target put "left-wing activism" ahead of shareholder returns.

Target, which operates roughly 2,000 stores nationwide, faced massive backlash for its 2023 Pride campaign. This included adding LGBTQ-friendly clothing, swimwear, and books. In his Thursday video, Uthmeier blasted its "rainbow sports bras for boys" and "books for kids that asked them to question their biological reality."

Following President Trump's lead, Target promised on Jan. 24 to remove its DEI policies.

The former Chief of Staff to Gov. Ron DeSantis, Uthmeier touched on one of the DeSantis administration's biggest topics: transgender issues. DeSantis' second term in office, marked by his failed presidential bid, was chock full of gender identity and sexuality discussions, including bans on transgender athletes in women's sports, sexuality discussions in elementary school, and transgender surgeries for minors.

Uthmeier was appointed to Attorney General on Monday after its former occupant, Ashley Moody, was appointed to the U.S. Senate. Moody, Florida's second female Attorney General, took over former Sen. Marco Rubio's seat after Trump poached Rubio to become the Secretary of State.

"No company should be celebrating and marketing the sexualization of our children," Uthmeier added.

The Trump Administration’s decision to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for over 500,000 Venezuelans has sparked outrage among South Florida lawmakers and activists who argue that sending exiles back to Nicolás Maduro’s regime will only worsen the ongoing humanitarian crisis, while experts argue this would increase migration.

Repatriation flights to Venezuela resumed on February 10th, raising concerns about broader U.S. policy towards Venezuela.

Many Republicans are calling for a return to the "maximum pressure" strategy that President Donald Trump (R) promoted during his first term. Secretary of State Marco Rubio (R) and Special Envoy for Latin America Mauricio Clever-Carone have voiced a similar hardline approach, but critics argue that returning to the “maximum pressure” approach would only cripple the Venezuelan economy without achieving regime change.

Doral Vice Mayor Maureen Porras, who's expressed disagreement with ending TPS, believes that the U.S. should continue to "apply pressure" while noting the complexity of the situation.

"The most recent pressure campaign was not effective in getting political change in Venezuela, but neither was the easing of sanctions," Vice Mayor Porras told The Floridian in an exclusive interview. "Regardless, we should continue to apply the pressure on Venezuela."

University of Colorado economist Francisco Rodriguez found that reinstating maximum pressure sanctions could drive 1 million more Venezuelans to flee over the next five years. His study further suggests that 4 million Venezuelans would have remained in their country had U.S. sanctions not been imposed.

Rodriguez, in a recent op-ed for The Hill, argued that returning to the strategy “would do nothing more than punish millions of Venezuelans who should not bear the burden for Maduro’s atrocities.”

“Rather than weaken Maduro,” Rodriguez wrote in the op-ed, “sanctions have strengthened his position, enabling his concentration of power and consolidation of ties with America’s adversaries. As U.S. companies have exited Venezuela, they have been replaced by actors from China, Russia and Iran, further entrenching Maduro’s regime and reducing U.S. influence in the region.”

Similarly, Venezuelan professor Luis Pedro España warns that resuming oil-related sanctions could dramatically increase poverty, echoing the conditions from 2017 to 2020, when 94% of Venezuelans lived in poverty and 2.5 million households fell into economic despair.

Florida Reps. Carlos Gimenez (R), Mario Diaz-Balart (R), Maria Elvira Salazar (R), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D), and Weston Commissioner Fabio Andrade are among the locals who also disagree with ending TPS.

Rep. Gimenez has urged Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to ensure Venezuelans fleeing communism receive protection, emphasizing that not all Venezuelans should be stigmatized due to criminal elements like the Tren de Aragua gang. Rep. Diaz-Balart has similarly pressed Secretary Noem to prevent the forced return of Venezuelans without criminal records to a "repressive dictatorship."

"The majority of Americans agree on the need to secure our borders and to remove immigrants that are breaking the law and are burdening our systems," Vice Mayor Porras told The Floridian. "Passing the Venezuelan Adjustment Act would help fix temporary solutions like TPS by providing law abiding Venezuelans already in the U.S. a path to permanent residency," she added.

MIAMI - Florida GOP Chairman Evan Power congratulated state Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) Secretary Jason Weida Tuesday on his selection as Gov. Ron DeSantis' next chief of staff.

"Congrats to @JasonWeidaFL on becoming the new Chief of Staff to our Governor @RonDeSantis," Power said

Jason Weida, who oversees the state's Medicaid program, has been AHCA secretary since 2023 after being the agency's chief of staff the year prior. Specifically, the agency manages the state's massive $35 billion Medicaid program.

The AHCA also is responsible for licensing the state's healthcare facilities and sharing healthcare data for public policy and information.

Before becoming AHCA secretary, Weida was a lawyer in the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), which included working as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in Boston, Massachusetts.

He also worked as a counsel in the DOJ's Office of Legal Policy in Washington, D.C.

Specifically, Weida worked alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) at the DOJ and oversaw numerous investigations, including drug diversion investigations of doctor’s offices, pharmacies, and hospitals.

In addition, Weida defended the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in numerous healthcare litigation matters. Over that time, Weida fought against regulatory challenges, Medicare appeals, and medical malpractice claims against "federally funded community health centers and officers in the Commissioned Corp of the U.S. Public Health Service."

He was also briefly mentioned for a high-ranking federal appointment job in President Donald Trump's first administration.

Earlier in his career, Weida practiced law at Jones Day and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. He earned a bachelor's degree from Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania and a Juris Doctor from the University of Connecticut School of Law.

Weida replaces James Uthmeier, who is set to become Florida’s Attorney General. The position opened up after DeSantis appointed Ashley Moody to the U.S. Senate after former Sen. Marco Rubio became Secretary of State.

MIAMI - Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism (SST) on Friday after President Donald Trump put the communist country back on the list on his first day back in office.

"The Trump Administration is restoring a tough Cuba policy that protects America and helps the Cuban people," Rubio said. "We've maintained Cuba on the State Sponsors of Terrorism list – where it belongs – and taken other steps. The Cuban regime's oppression of its people and malign actions must end."

Donald Trump restored Cuba as an SST after former President Joe Biden removed the country from the list during his final days in office. Trump previously designated Cuba as an SST in the last days of his first administration in 2021.

The Biden administration, in a deal facilitated by the Catholic Church, originally agreed to remove the designation in exchange for political prisoners who protested against the communist country in July 2021.

Cuban officials had been pushing for a policy change throughout Biden's term. Soon after the announcement, the country began releasing prisoners, including some sentenced to prison time for the 2021 protests.

However, like with many of Biden's policies, Trump scraped the idea upon his return to Washington. The decision also was condemned at the time by Florida officials from across the political aisle.

“I opposed the decision to remove them. I’m glad that it’s been reinstated because they are engaged in terrorist activity,” Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) stated. “They are part of the “Axis of Evil” with Iran, Russia, and Hezbollah. They need to be labeled as a state’s sponsor of terrorism.”

Republican Miami Mayor Francis Saurez, who like Rubio is Cuban, also blasted the decision. Another negative reaction came from House Republican Rep. Fabian Basabe, who called the decision an "insult" and "threat to national security."

About 1.5 million Cubans live in Florida, far exceeding any other state. A majority also live in Miami-Dade County, where Trump has become very popular.

Trump won Miami-Dade by 11 points over Vice President Kamala Harris, the first win for a Republican presidential candidate since George H.W. Bush in 1988.

Secretary Marco Rubio (R) has moved on from the U.S. Senate and sworn in as Secretary of State. Citing his expertise in foreign policy, Florida Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D) praised his qualifications, calling him the "best fit" for Secretary of State.

In an exclusive interview with The Floridan, Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick celebrated Secretary Rubio's new role in the Trump Administration, suggesting that he has appeal that extends across the aisle.

“I think Rubio has excellent experience. He has a proven track record of knowing how to wield soft power and also hard power,” Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick said. “He’s done a great job in the Senate. We may differ on some instances, but he’s actually the best fit for the position, especially when it comes to the state of Florida. When we’re looking at our positions and what we care about, he understands them intimately.”

The Florida Democrat highlighted Secretary Rubio’s personal connection to the immigrant experience as a strength to his new role as Secretary of State. “He understands how it is when your family comes from a dictatorship. He understands how hard it is to work here,” she explained.

Secretary Rubio's hardline stance aligns closely with President Donald Trump’s (R) own position, and the president's recent executive order designating drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations drew praise from Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick.

Expressing her support for the president's decision to designate drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick commented that “that was one thing I actually stood up and clapped for when Trump talked about it— [...] labeling them as terrorist organizations is 100% true,” she said.

“A lot of instability we see in Haiti and throughout the Caribbean, who is funding that? When you go to Haiti and you see Hispanic people there with guns, who are they? We all know that they’re Colombian mercenaries. We know what’s going on, but we’re not dealing with it.”

Several Florida officials, including newly-designated Senator Ashley Moody (R-FL) and Representatives Carlos Gimenez (R-FL), Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL), and Kat Cammack (R-FL), celebrated the unanimous confirmation of Marco Rubio as Secretary of State on X (formerly Twitter).

Although Rubio's confirmation as Secretary of State was expected, his unanimous vote of 99-0 is truly remarkable. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) was among the Senate Democrats who praised the former Senator.

Former Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, whom Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) appointed to replace Rubio in the Senate, posted her congratulations on X, highlighting the new Secretary of State's "skill, intellect and distinguished career [that] have prepared him to expertly lead the U.S. Department of State and put #AmericaFirst in all foreign affairs."

Meanwhile, both Rep. Salazar and Rep. Gimenez celebrated Rubio as a fellow Cuban-American attaining such a prestigious position, with Rep. Salazar saying, "What a joyous day for the exile community in SoFlo, Miami's very own Rubio was unanimously confirmed as Secretary of State! Marco, we are very proud of you. You are the living embodiment of the American dream. Dictators and socialist[s] around the world don't stand a chance!"

Rep. Gimenez's initial post celebrating Rubio's confirmation jokingly referred to him as "Mr. Worldwide," a reference to Cuban-American rapper and singer Pitbull and the duties of Secretary of State in representing the United States on the world stage.

"CONFIRMED: It's official Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The highest-ranking Hispanic American in the US government — ever! We have a new Mr. Worldwide from Miami & he's just been UNANIMOUSLY CONFIRMED by the US Senate!" Rep. Gimenez first posted.

A second post before Rubio's swearing-in echoed Rep. Salazar's earlier post: "Words cannot describe how immensely proud our Cuban-American community feels. One of our own will be implementing policy against the Communist dictatorships that forced our families from home. Only in America!"

Finally, Rep. Cammack's post was simple, "Florida's finest! Congratulations, Secretary Rubio!"

President Donald Takes Office, Destroys Biden Legacy and Failed Policies

Elections have consequences. President Donald Trump’s inauguration acceptance speech stung Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, as the 47th President savaged Biden administrations failed foreign and domestic policies..

All President Biden could do was sit there behind President Trump and take it on the chin.

President Donald Trump then signed a slew of Executive Orders aimed at undoing  the damage done by President Biden’s administration when it took over 4 years ago.

From “Draining the Swamp,” and “Unleashing American Energy,” to “Securing America's Borders,” President Trump made good on his campaign promises of restoring American Exceptionalism starting on Day 1 of his second term in office.

Here are just a few of those orders:

—President Trump signed an Executive Order reversing burdensome regulations that impeded Alaska’s ability to develop its vast natural resources.

—President Trump signed an Executive Order declaring a national emergency at the southern border to allow the government to gain operational control of the border, combat the cartels, and secure our nation.

—President Trump signed an Executive Order designating international cartels and transnational gangs Foreign Terrorist Organizations.

—President Trump signed an Executive Order establishing and implementing the President’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to oversee a substantial reduction in the size and scope of government.

—President Trump signed an Executive Order reinstating the name Mount McKinley and renaming the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

The Trump Administration: Where DEI Goes to Die

President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis have had their differences in the past, but both men agree that DEI has no business in American society.

MIAMI - Florida House Speaker Daniel "Danny" Perez congratulated President Donald Trump on Monday after he was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States.

"Congratulations to President Donald Trump on your historic inauguration! Your bold vision and leadership will pave the way for a stronger, more prosperous country," Perez said. "We pray for your success as you work to deliver on your promises that will make America great again."

Trump took the oath of office for a second time inside the Capital Rotunda following cold temperatures in Washington. It was the first time an inauguration had to be moved indoors since President Ronald Reagan's second term in 1985.

At 78, Trump is the oldest president to take the oath of office, passing former President Joe Biden by about five months. He also joined Grover Cleveland as the only president to serve two non-consecutive terms.

Trump served as the 45th President of the United States from 2017-2021. Cleveland was the nation's 22nd president from 1885-1889 and the 24th president from 1893-1897.

In part of his political comeback to Washington, Trump expanded his popularity in Florida, a state he has called home since September 2019. The president defeated Vice President Kamala Harris by a whopping 13 points.

Trump also won reliably blue Miami-Dade County by over 11 points, a first for a Republican presidential candidate since George H.W. Bush in 1988. Overall, Trump won 61 of Florida's 67 counties.

Previously, Trump won Florida by three points over Biden in 2020. He also won the state by 1 point over former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Trump ally on many "MAGA" issues, also won his reelection bid over Democratic candidate Charlie Crist by 20 points in 2022.

At the state level, Perez and Republicans have expanded their supermajorities in the House. They also added former House Democrats Susan Vales and Hillary Cassel to the GOP in December.

Currently, the GOP has 87 members in the 120-seat House. They also have 28 out of 40 seats in the Senate.

Trump has also used his Florida acclaim to help fill his presidential cabinet. Among them, the president nominated Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as the next secretary of state and former state Attorney General Pam Bondi for U.S. attorney general.

MIAMI - Florida House Speaker Danny "Daniel" Perez congratulated state Attorney General Ashley Moody on her appointment to the U.S. Senate by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday.

"Senator @MarcoRubio leaves big shoes to fill and in @AshleyMoodyFL Floridians will have a US Senator who can continue to carry the torch for the rule of law, freedom abroad, and prosperity at home," Perez said. "Congratulations AG Moody on your selection and look forward to your leadership!"

Moody has been Florida's top prosecutor since January 2019. The 49-year-old will replace Sen. Marco Rubio, who will vacate his seat after likely becoming the next Secretary of State.

"I'm proud to announce that I'm selecting our Attorney General Ashley Moody to serve as our next U.S. Senator," said DeSantis at his Orlando press conference Thursday morning, stressing Moody's pro-conservatism, tough-on-immigration stance, and record of "delivering."

Moody becomes the second woman to serve Florida in the Senate after Republican Paula Hawkins from 1981-1987. A DeSantis ally, other contenders for the seat included Florida Lt. Gov Jeanette Nunez, President-elect Donald Trump's daughter-in-law Lara Trump, and DeSantis chief-of-staff James Uthmeier.

DeSantis was also briefly rumored to appoint himself to the seat. The governor later picked Uthmeier to succeed Moody as Florida's Attorney General.

Before becoming Attorney General, Moody was elected Circuit Court Judge of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit in Hillsborough County in 2006. At 31, she was the youngest judge in Florida history.

She also attended the University of Florida where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting and law degree. Afterward, Moody attended Stetson University College of Law earning a Masters of Law in International Law.

Moody's appointment will happen after President-elect Trump is inaugurated on Jan. 20 and Rubio officially resigns his seat. Her Senate term will last two years and be up for election in 2026.

Moody thanked DeSantis after his announcement.

"Governor, I want you to know I will not let you down, I will not let the citizens of Florida down, and I will not let my country down," Moody said, adding a promise to bring "persistence, passion, and tenacity" as Attorney General to the U.S. Senate.

"I'm ready to show up for this nation and fight for President Trump to deliver the American first agenda on day one," Moody added.
