Representative Greg Steube (R-FL) is reintroducing legislation to prevent United States security assistance from going to Lebanon until their government stops recognizing Hezbollah.

Creatively named the "Preventing Armed Groups from Engaging in Radicalism" (PAGER) Act, a likely reference to Israel's elimination of Hezbollah leadership via explosive pagers, Rep. Steube's bill terminates US security assistance to the Armed Forces of Lebanon until their government rescinds recognition of Hezbollah and its military wing.

Additionally, Hezbollah members must be banned from serving in the Lebanese government, which must also extend to affiliates and members of other Iran-backed militias. Moreover, such groups must be expelled from Lebanon, all weapons supplied by Iran and these affiliates must be destroyed, and any Americans exposing Hezbollah's influence and imprisoned by the Lebanese government must be released.

In his press release, Rep. Steube said, "While the world celebrates the demise of Hassan Nasrallah, the United States must remain vigilant to the threat of Hezbollah. Until the people of Lebanon can live free of Hezbollah's terror and persecution, long-term peace and stability in the Middle East will remain out of reach. As the Trump administration works to forge closer ties between Israel and the Arab world, Congress must do its part to contain Iran and eliminate its terrorist network. My PAGER Act will ensure US tax dollars never end up in the hands of Hezbollah."

Earlier in February, the Florida Congressman wrote a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, demanding the cessation of security assistance funding to Iraq for similar reasons.

As Steube explained, pro-Iran Shia militias that the United States funded to defeat the Islamic State (ISIS) have attacked US forces ever since, staging 170 attacks in just two years.

"Replacing ISIS with Iran-backed terrorist militias does not make sense and only fuels the onslaught of terror that the Iranian regime seeks to export. Furthermore, many Iran-backed militias in Iraq have not even been designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, including the Badr Corps itself," Steube fumed in his letter.

President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Martin Makary, is an incredibly credentialed Harvard graduate, John Hopkins University surgeon, and bestselling author. Perhaps of greater note, he has also been unafraid to challenge healthcare establishment views on a variety of topics ranging from pricing to federal agency policy. He may be uniquely suited to reform the FDA, and there’s no better target for reform than one of its subagencies, the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP).

Dr. Makary has a rare opportunity to move CTP away from outdated, prohibitionist policies.

He could lead the CTP toward a more credible position - recognizing established scientific consensus around tobacco harm reduction, and refocusing the CTP to equip individuals with evidence-based solutions. That would allow consumers to make educated decisions on the products they see every day on store shelves.

To be clear, adult smokers should quit smoking. However, that’s their decision. If they want to continue using nicotine products, they should have a reliable information source that can draw distinction between the relative risk of different products. That, in fact, is the mandate of the CTP and one that it has failed to meet.

If properly reformed, CTP can empower individual consumers to make informed decisions related to nicotine products. Research has well established that vapor and heat-not-burn technologies are far less harmful than traditional cigarettes. And, new products like nicotine pouches are even less harmful, in some cases on par with traditional cessation products like nicotine gum.

Adult consumers need to appreciate these distinctions and the relative risks. Not all products are created equally. And, CTP's purpose is to draw these distinctions and approve products for the marketplace.

When the CTP fails in its mission, the marketplace is flooded with unregulated and unapproved products. Unfortunately, that is the reality today. Consumers cannot trust products on the shelves and responsible actors - that are going through the FDA approval process - are undercut by actors, often Chinese-based companies, that are not. This environment is not in the interest of public health, consumers, or responsible companies trying to play by the rules.

Dr. Makary is under consideration by the U.S. Senate HELP Committee this week. Policymakers should elevate this issue, along with others, as he continues through the confirmation process.

Every day, I put on my uniform in South Florida, knowing I might not come home. That’s the reality of policing in America today for all of my brothers and sisters in law enforcement. But it’s not just the inherent dangers of the job—car chases, violent criminals, and responding to active threats. It’s the disturbing trend of officers being deliberately targeted for attack simply because they wear the badge. This is why Congress must act now and pass the Protect and Serve Act, which would create a federal offense for those who intentionally commit violence against law enforcement officers.

For too long, we’ve watched as criminals have become emboldened, fueled by anti-police rhetoric that dehumanizes those of us who serve. I’ve seen it firsthand in Florida and all over this country—ambush attacks on officers, drive-by shootings targeting patrol cars, and violent criminals actively seeking to harm those sworn to uphold the law.

The numbers don’t lie. According to FBI statistics, law enforcement officer deaths and assaults have surged in recent years, with many of these attacks being premeditated. This isn’t just a crisis—it’s an all-out war on police.

The Protect and Serve Act is more than just another piece of legislation. It’s a vital statement from our federal government that attacks on law enforcement will not be tolerated. The bill would create a new federal offense for knowingly causing serious bodily injury to a law enforcement officer. In cases where the crime results in death, a life sentence could be imposed.

This isn’t about giving cops special treatment; it’s about acknowledging that when criminals target officers, they are attacking the rule of law itself.

Some argue that states already have laws to protect officers and punish violent offenders. But here’s the problem: state-level protections are inconsistent. Florida has strong laws, but what about officers in states where radical prosecutors refuse to enforce them?

The Protect and Serve Act ensures that justice is served regardless of jurisdiction, sending a clear message that violence against police is a national issue, not just a local concern.

I’ve heard the critics claim this law isn’t needed, that police officers aren’t truly at risk. To them, I say: Walk a shift in our shoes. Ride along in our patrol car in the middle of the night. Answer a domestic violence call where a suspect has nothing to lose. Stand at the scene of a crime when a crowd starts to turn against you.

Every officer knows the feeling of being a target. Every officer knows a brother or sister in blue who has been attacked simply for wearing the uniform.

When criminals believe they can attack officers with impunity, it doesn’t just put cops in danger—it emboldens lawlessness, making communities less safe for everyone.

The Protect and Serve Act doesn’t eliminate the risks of policing. But it sends a powerful message that attacking law enforcement officers is attacking the foundation of public safety itself.

It gives prosecutors the tools to hold violent criminals accountable, no matter where they are. It ensures that officers who make the ultimate sacrifice are honored with more than just words, but with real legal consequences for those who seek to harm them.

I love my job. I love serving my community. I took an oath to protect and serve, knowing the risks that come with it. But I shouldn’t have to accept that being ambushed or executed in cold blood is just part of the job.

Congress has the power to make a difference. It’s time to stand with law enforcement, to back the men and women who keep our communities safe, and to send a clear message: If you target police officers, you will face federal justice.

I implore Congress to pass the Protect and Serve Act before another officer’s name is added to the memorial wall.

Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) has sent a letter to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) urging them to oppose any Democratic resistance to President Donald Trump (R) and Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative. The goal of the initiative is to cut waste and abuse in the federal government.

The letter, which comes as the government funding deadline quickly approaches, was sent alongside a multitude of Sen. Scott's colleagues in the Republican Conference of both chambers. It begins by providing a rationale to defend DOGE and its goals.

"President Trump campaigned on a promise to the American people to reduce the size and scope of the federal government, and his resounding victory last November confirms he has been given a mandate by our constituents to make good on that promise," began Sen. Scott and his colleagues. "His clear message that taxpayers deserve to know not only how their money is being spent, but also that it is being spent responsibly, resonated with voters."

Later in the letter, Scott and his cohorts shared that they are "deeply concerned" with the prospect of Democrats maintaining the "unsustainable status quo" related to DOGE's government spending efforts with the deadline less than two weeks away.

"Rather than negotiating in good faith to find a solution that keeps the government open, we understand that Democrats are insisting that any government funding deal include policy provisions that would tie the hands of the President and prohibit DOGE from continuing their efforts to promote transparency and accountability in government spending," the Republicans wrote. "It has become clear that many Congressional Democrats would prefer a government shutdown rather than even attempt to rein in bloated federal bureaucracies."

The Republicans then told their party leadership that they would not support a funding package that would "be weaponized against President Trump" and that they should reject any effort aimed at diminishing DOGE.

They concluded their correspondence by saying the United States of America cannot allow the left side of the aisle to interfere with Trump and Musk's initiative.

"A bloated federal bureaucracy and unsupervised, unaccountable federal spending have contributed to the existential fiscal threat our country faces, with a $36 trillion national debt growing because of perennial budget deficits. Our country cannot afford to allow Democrats to frustrate President Trump’s work to rein in government spending and bring needed and long-overdue accountability to Washington. We look forward to working with you to resist these attempts, and ensure that the President can continue to deliver on his mandate," the letter concludes.

While lambasting the Covid vaccine on Wednesday, Gov. Ron DeSantis questioned how effective flu shots are and whether physicians push them in return for compensation.

His comments came at a Tampa press conference to pressure lawmakers to permanently ban the Covid vaccine mandates he signed in 2021. DeSantis' opposition to the Covid vaccine, however, segued him into another pushed-for vaccine: the flu shot.

"That's a whole other thing, this flu shot—how effective that is...It doesn't exactly have a stellar record with efficacy," he said, before asking Florida Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo to look into how physicians are being compensated by pharmaceutical companies.

"The question is why is this stuff being pushed on the society? Because people make money off of it! That's why it's being pushed, I think we all know that," DeSantis added.

Getting a flu vaccine every year is highly recommended by various health agencies, including the Center for Disease Control and the Mayo Clinic. Because flu season usually runs from October to May, and because it's a mercurial virus subject to frequent changes, the vaccine is usually available around September.

The CDC estimated that the flu vaccination prevented 6 million flu-related illnesses in the U.S. in the 2022-2023 flu season, 2.9 million medical visits, 65,000 hospitalizations, and 3,700 deaths. Since 2010, the vaccine has averaged a 38% effectiveness rate.

DeSantis's vaccine skepticism is heavily reflected in the views of Surgeon General Ladapo, who has been a vocal anti-vaccine advocate and strongly aligned with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy.

Florida opponents have accused Ladapo's direction of leading to an increase in cured diseases, such as Measles, which had a small outbreak in Broward and Orange Counties last year. Earlier this week, a Miami high school student came down with the highly infectious disease.

Rep. Juan Carlos Porras (R-Miami) announced the filing of HB 983, a legislation designed to reform Florida's Homeowners Association (HOA) by enhancing enforcement, improving transparency, and empowering residents with stronger rights.

"As Florida continues to grow, it is critical that our HOA system is fair, transparent, and accessible to all residents," Porra said in a press release. "HB 983 introduces key reforms that address persistent challenges in HOA governance, ensuring that homeowners are protected from unfair practices and have a greater say in the communities they call home."

Juan Carlos Porras added HB 983 seeks to "ensure that HOAs operate accountable while providing homeowners with the necessary tools to protect their interests."

The bill would authorize local law enforcement agencies to investigate, audit, and inspect HOAs within their jurisdictions. The release noted this would provide oversight to enforce compliance under state law.

Furthermore, HB 983 would reform the recall process by adjusting voting regulations and quorum requirements, thus preventing board members from stalling or obstructing recalls.

In his statement, Porras mentioned the bill's introduction of "One Way Attorney's Fees", a provision that allows homeowners to recuperate legal costs after winning lawsuits against their HOA, which he says will decrease the financial burden on residents seeking legal recourse.

The release said HOAs have been poorly run because of financial mismanagement, fraudulent activity, lack of transparency, and obstruction of homeowner rights, thus adding more stress for residents.

On those points, HB 983 would increase transparency by requiring prospective homebuyers to receive significant HOA documentation and records before finalizing a property, which it says will guarantee the prospective homebuyer understands their obligation before purchasing.

The bill specifies it strengthens Florida Statute 720, which requires legal protections for homeowners and guarantees that HOA laws are honored.

"HB 983 will require more transparency for prospective homebuyers, grants enforcement authority to local law enforcement, and completely reforms the recall process among many other critical reforms," Porras added on X. "This bill is reflective of the momentum behind HOA reform here in Florida and I am honored to continue tackling the issue!"

If passed, HB 983 would take effect on July 1.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has announced the charging and extradition of terrorist Mohammad Sharifullah, also known as “Jafar,” for helping orchestrate the Abbey Gate terror attacks which killed 13 US military service members. 

The August 26, 2021 attacks occurred during President Joe Biden’s Afghanistan withdrawal debacle. 

As US servicemembers attempted to coordinate the evacuation of thousands of Afghani civilians, ISIS-K terrorist Abdul Rahman al-Logari detonated a body-worn suicide bomb, killing 13 U.S. military service members and approximately 160 civilians.

Attorney General Pam Bondi commended the DOJ and President Donald Trump’s leadership for Sharifullah’s extradition. 

“This evil ISIS-K terrorist orchestrated the brutal murder of 13 heroic service members,” said Attorney General Bondi. “Under President Trump’s strong leadership on the world stage, this Department of Justice will ensure that terrorists like Mohammad Sharifullah have no safe haven, no second chances, and no worse enemy than the United States of America.”

According to the DOJ, Sharifullah confessed to helping plan and execute the attack while being interviewed by US intelligence officers.

Sharifullah was also complicit in other high-profile ISIS-K terror attacks leading to hundreds of deaths. 

In the 2016 attack on Canada’s Kabul embassy, Sharifullah allegedly conducted surveillance to prepare a suicide bomber and later transported the bomber to the attack area.

The ISIS-K terrorists responsible for the horrific March 2024 Moscow theatre attack were also reportedly instructed on how to use automatic machine guns by Sharifullah. 

Sharifullah faces a maximum penalty of life in prison.

Sharifullah’s extradition follows Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s expanded efforts to investigate and review the US’ tumultuous Afghanistan withdrawal.

Secretary Hegseth’s review, which he claimed would bring “full accountability” is expected to lead to the firing of military leadership who contributed to the withdrawal’s planning.

Polls measuring viewers’ reactions to President Donald Trump’s recent joint address to Congress are signaling overwhelming support for the president's speech.

A CBS poll conducted shortly after President Trump’s speech recorded 76% of viewers approved it. 

While the poll claimed 51% of viewers were Republican, 27% were independent while 20% were Democrats. 

The 76% approval rate means Trump’s speech gained nearly all of independent viewers’ favour.  

A CNN poll with similar findings reported 69% of viewers had a positive response to Trump’s speech. 

CNN’s poll was composed of 21% Democrats, 44% Republicans, and 35% independents, mirroring CBS’ poll’s finding of Trump’s overwhelming support amongst independents. 

More women, 71%, than men, 68%, approved of Trump’s speech while more men, 17%,  than women, 15%, disapproved. 

For both polls, top issues voters supported Trump in were immigration, wasteful spending, and the war in Ukraine. 

Per CNN’s poll, Trump received 76% of support for his immigration policies, opposed to President Joe Biden’s 41% support after his last joint address. 

Similarly, 61% of viewers supported Trump’s policies for the economy, contrasting with President Biden’s 56% support. 

64% of viewers claimed Trump’s approach to Ukraine is “about right,” while 33% stated it is “not supportive enough.”

Trump’s remarks gained commendations from Republicans and hostile criticism from Democrats, with some even being evicted due to raucous behavior during the address.

“Tonight, President Trump made his triumphant return to Congress to share his bold, optimistic vision for renewing the American Dream,” said Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) similarly stated “this is the fifth State of the Union address I’ve seen Trump give — it was by far his best.”

Representative Al Green (D-TX) spoke to the media following his removal from the House Chamber during President Donald Trump's (R) Address to the Joint Session of Congress last night.

Almost immediately, Rep. Green stood up and began heckling President Trump during his speech, and after Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) reminded Rep. Green to keep decorum, Green heckled again and again, leading the Sergeant of Arms to remove him.

Vice President JD Vance (R) was seen smiling throughout the fanfare and was physically motioning for hecklers to get out of the chamber.

Following the display, Rep. Green shared with reporters that his outbursts toward President Trump were about his belief that Trump does not have a "mandate to cut Medicaid," and that he wanted to make those thoughts known. Green acknowledged that he would face any punishment given to him.

"The President said he had a mandate, and I was making it clear to the President that he has no mandate to cut Medicaid," began Green. "I have people who are very fearful. These are poor people, and they only have Medicaid in their lives when it comes to their health care. And I want him to know that his budget calls for deep cuts in Medicaid. He needs to save Medicaid, protect it. We need to raise the cap on Social Security. There's a possibility that it's going to be hurt, and we've got to protect Medicare."

The Texas congressman continued, sharing that his constituents rely on these programs and that President Trump does not care about them.

"These are the safety net programs that people in my congressional district depend on, and this President seems to care less about them and more about the number of people that he can remove from the various programs that have been so helpful."

Furthermore, Rep. Green mentioned that he was willing to "suffer whatever punishment" that is levied upon him, and said it was "worth it to let people know that there are some of us who are going to stand up against this President's desire to cut Medicaid."

Representative Troy Nehls (R-TX) announced that he has moved to censure Rep. Green.

Finally, Green shared that he is "working on [his] Articles of Impeachment."

Al Green represents Texas' 9th Congressional District.

Sen. Tom Leek (R-Ormond Beach) and Rep. Hillary Cassel (R-Dania Beach) recently filed bills to show Florida's support for the Jewish State by expanding the state's existing anti-Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) law.

Tom Leek and Hillary Cassel, under SB 1678/HB 1519, would enhance the state's policy against opponents who participate in boycotts against Israel.

Florida's BDS law currently covers commercial boycotts. If passed, the legislation would also include academic institutions and non-profit organizations that participate in boycotts against the Jewish State.

In addition, the bill would ban state financial interactions with groups that boycott Israel or participate in antisemitic discrimination or behavior. The law would also apply to political subdivisions fomenting Jewish hate.

The bill would also require grant applications to comply with the state's anti-discrimination laws and attest against participation in boycotts or antisemitic behavior against Israel. It adds that violators would be subject to penalties and repayment of funds.

The bill comes after Cassel switched her party affiliation from Democrat to Republican in December over, in part, her former party's lack of support for the Jewish State.

"As a mother, I want to help build a world where our children are judged on their character and their actions not on their labels," Cassel said at the time.  "As a proud Jewish woman, I have been increasingly troubled by the Democratic Party’s failure to unequivocally support Israel and its willingness to tolerate extreme progressive voices that justify or condone acts of terrorism."

Another Florida lawmaker, Sen. Randy Fine (R-Melbourne), has been at the forefront of legislation against anti-Jewish bigotry, especially after the Hamas terrorist attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

"We need to immediately expel any non-Americans who are or have advocated for Muslim terror as a first step," he told The Floridian in a text message. "We need to investigate and prosecute organizations on college campuses—includ[ing] those administrators and faculty that support them—and outside them that promote Muslim terror. 

If approved, the legislation would take effect July 1.

Florida Chief Financial Officer and Congressional District 1 Republican congressional nominee Jimmy Patronis (R-FL) spoke to The Floridian regarding the persistent antics of House Democrats during President Donald Trump's Address to the Joint Session of Congress last night. Senate Minority Leader Sen. Jason Pizzo (D-FL) also called out his fellow Democrats over their behavior.

For context, one of President Trump's special guests for his address to Congress included a young boy who has battled brain cancer but has dreamed of serving in law enforcement. During the speech, Trump declared him an honorary United States Secret Service agent, bringing forth thunderous applause.

This sparked little to no reaction from House Democrats, as it seemed planned that they were not going to clap for anything in Trump's speech. He even called them out for it, too.

However, CFO Patronis shared his thoughts on the issue with The Floridian.

"You know, it's unfortunate," Patronis began. "I think when you look at a young man who's fighting cancer who was given an honorary Secret Service status, or the young man who was given his notice that he was going to be accepted into the Naval Academy (Patronis meant West Point)."

The congressional hopeful continued, sharing that a lot of the stories President Trump highlighted should be celebrated in a bipartisan fashion, not along party lines.

"Those are achievements we should be excited about as a nation, not a partisan fight. You know, the Trump derangement syndrome is a real thing, and the Democrats are just eaten up with it," said Patronis. "Unfortunately, how they stand and accept the type of expenditure that this previous administration was doing is unacceptable, but I'm glad it seemed right like again like I said, transparency is the best disinfectant."

Moreover, State Sen. Pizzo shared his displeasure with the Democrats who refused to stand up for the child with brain cancer.

A group of U.S. investors led by BlackRock has agreed to acquire majority stakes in two key ports at either end of the Panama Canal, which was previously controlled by Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison. The $22.8 billion deal, which includes dozens of other ports worldwide, comes amid heightened concerns from the Trump administration over China's alleged influence in the region.

The acquisition addresses national security fears raised by President Donald Trump (R) and other U.S. officials who argue that China’s involvement in the Panama Canal is a threat.

The two terminals—Balboa on the Pacific side and Cristóbal on the Atlantic—handled 40% of all container traffic passing through the canal in 2024.

Since coming into office, President Trump has repeatedly expressed concerns that China could restrict American-bound shipping, and in recent months, he even suggested taking military control of the canal, arguing that the U.S. “foolishly gave it away.”

With the deal now in place, state Senator Nick DiCeglie (R) championed the decision, emphasizing its significance for U.S. foreign policy.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was asked about deal shortly after his 2025 State of the State address in Tallahassee.

“I think strategically getting China out of there is good. It’s good for the United States,” he affirmed Citing that it would’ve otherwise helped China “gain a strategic advantage over the United States,” the state senator added that “anytime we can reverse those trends, especially in the Panama Canal, it is good for American foreign policy.”

CK Hutchison, a global port operator controlled by billionaire Li Ka-shing, had faced pressure from U.S. and Panamanian officials to divest from the Panama ports. Though the company initially considered legal action to resist external pressure, the offer from BlackRock was ultimately too lucrative to decline. It earned CK Hutchison an estimated $19 billion in cash after adjustments for minority interests.

The deal is part of a broader geopolitical effort by the U.S. to limit China's global reach in strategic shipping routes. Panama, which had previously joined China’s Belt and Road Initiative, has since withdrawn from the program and is working to ensure the neutrality of its critical infrastructure.

Over the past few months, there has been much anxiety in the Thoroughbred racing community about legislation working its way through Tallahassee that would strip Florida’s racing permit holders of their obligation to host live races, turning them into nothing more than gaming facilities. Those of us fortunate enough to work in this industry understand that it’s a partnership, a bond, a tradition – it’s a vital part of what has defined us and this state for generations.

The proposed legislation, HB 105/SB 408, is being touted as a solution to “save” Florida Thoroughbreds. As a top trainer at Gulfstream Park, I’m here to tell you Florida racing is alive and well – but this bill could kill it.

Our $3.24 billion racing industry speaks to the way Florida-bred horses consistently appear in winners’ circles across the nation. Florida racing brings in tourists and it draws talent, with as much as 75% of all juvenile Thoroughbreds training right here in the Sunshine State.

Countless visitors attend Gulfstream Park for the Florida Derby, a key race to identify contenders amongst the dreamers in the chase for a spot in the prestigious Kentucky Derby starting gate.

These numbers illustrate Florida racing’s economic significance, but they fail to capture the true essence of what this industry means to those of us who dedicate our lives to it.

My passion for racing is about the life I’ve built alongside these extraordinary animals and the community that surrounds them. A single horse’s journey involves a dedicated team of grooms, blacksmiths, veterinarians, riders and countless others who nurture, train, and care for them.

Every day we rise early to feed, tack and train before sunup, and finish with sunsetting cool-outs, feed, and night checks – all in the pursuit of shared triumph at the finish line on Saturday. We put our hearts into these horses, and in return they teach us resilience, trust, and the deepest forms of loyalty.

To me, a horse isn’t just an athlete on a track; a horse is a best friend. There’s that indescribable bond you’ve nurtured, and the mutual trust earned. They rely on you just as much as you rely on them, and we have each other's back throughout. And when you’ve earned that trust, that’s a loyalty that can’t be matched.

That’s why it’s impossible to swallow this bill, which is being pushed under the dual falsehood of “reform” and “industry supported”. HB 105 casts racing aside in favor of slot machines and card rooms, replacing the beauty of live racing with the cold, impersonal world of gaming machines.

This bill threatens an entire industry that has long been a feather in Florida’s cap, and it undercuts years of hard work by so many of us who have dedicated our lives to these majestic animals. It’s going to hurt people like me and my family for whom the horse is lifestyle, passion and, finally, a way to make a living.

Decoupling — severing live horse racing from Florida gaming venues — undermines our commitment to these animals and the entire industry. This bill is an insult to everything we stand for. The future of Florida racing is on the line. Let’s stand together to protect it.

Representative Vern Buchanan's (R-FL) Chronic Disease Flexible Coverage Act has passed the House of Representatives and will now go to the Senate.

The bipartisan bill, which Rep. Buchanan introduced with Representative Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) in early February, allows employers that offer high-deductible health plans (HDHP) to employees an option to include pre-deductible coverage of healthcare services treating common chronic diseases, a policy first implemented in President Donald Trump's first term in 2019.

Healthcare services listed in Rep. Buchanan's legislation include beta blockers for congestive heart failure, blood pressure monitors, glucometers for diabetes, asthma inhalers, and cholesterol drugs for heart disease patients.

In his press release, the Florida Congressman said, "With six in ten Americans living with at least one chronic disease, it is clear that we must expand options for people to manage their chronic health conditions. The Chronic Disease Flexible Coverage Act offers employees more flexibility to manage their chronic diseases, improving patient health while reducing high out-of-pocket costs. I'm proud that this legislation passed the House with unanimous bipartisan support, and I look forward to getting this bill signed into law."

With Republicans controlling the Senate and White House, Buchanan's wish could soon be granted.

The Chronic Disease Flexible Coverage Act is the Florida Congressman's second major healthcare bill introduced in the new Congress, with the first being the Maximizing Israel-U.S. Research Advancement and Collaborative Leadership in Emerging (MIRACLE) Medical Technology Act.

The MIRACLE Act strengthens medical research and development collaboration between the United States and Israel, including creating a U.S.-Israel Health Care Collaboration Center.

More recently, Buchanan introduced two more bipartisan healthcare bills. The Permanent Telehealth from Home Act permanently removes the originating site and geographic limitations for telehealth services, meaning they can be accessed anywhere.

The other, the Lung Cancer Screening and Prevention Act, expedites approval processes for new lung cancer screening tests through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Florida was listed as the best state in the country for education and the economy in 2024, according to U.S. News and World Report

The report found the Sunshine State No. 1 for Higher Education and No. 10 in Pre-K-12 Education. Florida also has a lower debt at graduation ($13,872) than the national average ($14,086) and a higher high school graduation rate (87.3) than the national average (85.9).

The state was also No. 1 in education in the report's 2023 findings.

On the economy, Florida holds a 4.8% job growth, which is 2.1% better than the national average (2.7%). The state also has a 1.7% net migration rate, much better than the 0.3% national average, and a $1.87 Venture Capital per GDP compared to the national average of $6.23.

Overall, Florida ranked No.9 of all U.S. states according to the report. The state also placed No. 13 for Crime and Corrections, No. 13 for Natural Environment, No. 20 for Fiscal Stability, No. 20 for Infrastructure, No. 26 for Health Care, and No. 45 for Opportunity.

While mostly positive, a different report found some Florida cities as having financially distressed residents.

For its report, U.S. News and World ranked all 50 U.S. states across 71 metrics across eight categories. The categories were all weighted based on the average of three years of data from national surveys asking 70,000 people total to judge the importance of each subject in their state.

Utah ranked as the best state in the country with Top 10 marks on Education (No. 2), Economy (No. 3), and Infrastructure (No. 3), and Crime and Corrections (No. 9). The state was followed by New Hampshire, Nebraska, Minnesota, and Idaho in the top 5.

On other metrics, New Hampshire ranked No. 1 for Crime and Corrections while its neighbor, Vermont, placed No. 1 for Opportunity. North Dakota ranked No. 1 for Infrastructure, Wyoming placed No. 1 for Fiscal Stability, while Hawaii finished No. 1 in both Health Care and Natural Environment.

Louisiana, New Mexico, Mississippi, Arkansas, and West Virginia were all states in the bottom 5 of the rankings. In categories dead last, Louisiana was No. 50 in Crime and Corrections, New Mexico was N0. 50 in Education, while Mississippi was No. 50 in Health Care and the Economy.

Notably, no other state in the Southeastern United States finished anywhere near Florida's ranking. Georgia was the next closest at No. 18 followed by North Carolina at No. 19.

President Donald Trump has imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports while increasing current tariffs on Chinese goods by 10%.

The tariffs had been originally imposed last February but were paused by President Trump due to ongoing negotiations with the respective countries. 

Trump has repeatedly promised, both during his presidential campaign and first days in office, that he will use tariffs against Canada, Mexico, and other countries he feels are “out of line” with the US.

As justification for the tariffs, the Trump administration pointed to allegedly lackluster cooperation from China, Mexico, and Canada on curbing illegal immigration and drug trafficking. 

Last February, Trump paused incoming sanctions after Canada and Mexico agreed to increase immigration and drug trafficking enforcement. 

Mexico had pledged to supply 10,000 troops to the border in an attempt to curb the influx of drug trafficking (specifically fentanyl). 

Meanwhile, Canada promised to execute a $1.3 Billion Border plan including 10,000 personnel that will expand Canada’s border enforcement activities. 

Mexico and Canada’s initiatives, however, did not stop Trump from ultimately imposing tariffs, which Chinese, Mexican, and Canadian leaders have rejected.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Trump of wanting to destroy Canada’s economy to “make it easier to annex us."

"That is never going to happen,” assured Prime Minster Trudeau. “We will never be the 51st state.” 

Trump has previously quipped about Canada being exempt from tariffs if they were to become a US state. 

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick supported Trump’s tariffs, claiming they were being leveraged to incite Canadians and Mexicans to give American businesses better trading terms. 

“President Trump is getting deals done for the American people,” said Secretary Lutnick. “Both the Mexicans and the Canadians were on the phone with me all day today, trying to show that they’ll do better and the President is listening.”
