President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Martin Makary, is an incredibly credentialed Harvard graduate, John Hopkins University surgeon, and bestselling author. Perhaps of greater note, he has also been unafraid to challenge healthcare establishment views on a variety of topics ranging from pricing to federal agency policy. He may be uniquely suited to reform the FDA, and there’s no better target for reform than one of its subagencies, the Center for Tobacco Products (CTP).

Dr. Makary has a rare opportunity to move CTP away from outdated, prohibitionist policies.

He could lead the CTP toward a more credible position - recognizing established scientific consensus around tobacco harm reduction, and refocusing the CTP to equip individuals with evidence-based solutions. That would allow consumers to make educated decisions on the products they see every day on store shelves.

To be clear, adult smokers should quit smoking. However, that’s their decision. If they want to continue using nicotine products, they should have a reliable information source that can draw distinction between the relative risk of different products. That, in fact, is the mandate of the CTP and one that it has failed to meet.

If properly reformed, CTP can empower individual consumers to make informed decisions related to nicotine products. Research has well established that vapor and heat-not-burn technologies are far less harmful than traditional cigarettes. And, new products like nicotine pouches are even less harmful, in some cases on par with traditional cessation products like nicotine gum.

Adult consumers need to appreciate these distinctions and the relative risks. Not all products are created equally. And, CTP's purpose is to draw these distinctions and approve products for the marketplace.

When the CTP fails in its mission, the marketplace is flooded with unregulated and unapproved products. Unfortunately, that is the reality today. Consumers cannot trust products on the shelves and responsible actors - that are going through the FDA approval process - are undercut by actors, often Chinese-based companies, that are not. This environment is not in the interest of public health, consumers, or responsible companies trying to play by the rules.

Dr. Makary is under consideration by the U.S. Senate HELP Committee this week. Policymakers should elevate this issue, along with others, as he continues through the confirmation process.

Every day, I put on my uniform in South Florida, knowing I might not come home. That’s the reality of policing in America today for all of my brothers and sisters in law enforcement. But it’s not just the inherent dangers of the job—car chases, violent criminals, and responding to active threats. It’s the disturbing trend of officers being deliberately targeted for attack simply because they wear the badge. This is why Congress must act now and pass the Protect and Serve Act, which would create a federal offense for those who intentionally commit violence against law enforcement officers.

For too long, we’ve watched as criminals have become emboldened, fueled by anti-police rhetoric that dehumanizes those of us who serve. I’ve seen it firsthand in Florida and all over this country—ambush attacks on officers, drive-by shootings targeting patrol cars, and violent criminals actively seeking to harm those sworn to uphold the law.

The numbers don’t lie. According to FBI statistics, law enforcement officer deaths and assaults have surged in recent years, with many of these attacks being premeditated. This isn’t just a crisis—it’s an all-out war on police.

The Protect and Serve Act is more than just another piece of legislation. It’s a vital statement from our federal government that attacks on law enforcement will not be tolerated. The bill would create a new federal offense for knowingly causing serious bodily injury to a law enforcement officer. In cases where the crime results in death, a life sentence could be imposed.

This isn’t about giving cops special treatment; it’s about acknowledging that when criminals target officers, they are attacking the rule of law itself.

Some argue that states already have laws to protect officers and punish violent offenders. But here’s the problem: state-level protections are inconsistent. Florida has strong laws, but what about officers in states where radical prosecutors refuse to enforce them?

The Protect and Serve Act ensures that justice is served regardless of jurisdiction, sending a clear message that violence against police is a national issue, not just a local concern.

I’ve heard the critics claim this law isn’t needed, that police officers aren’t truly at risk. To them, I say: Walk a shift in our shoes. Ride along in our patrol car in the middle of the night. Answer a domestic violence call where a suspect has nothing to lose. Stand at the scene of a crime when a crowd starts to turn against you.

Every officer knows the feeling of being a target. Every officer knows a brother or sister in blue who has been attacked simply for wearing the uniform.

When criminals believe they can attack officers with impunity, it doesn’t just put cops in danger—it emboldens lawlessness, making communities less safe for everyone.

The Protect and Serve Act doesn’t eliminate the risks of policing. But it sends a powerful message that attacking law enforcement officers is attacking the foundation of public safety itself.

It gives prosecutors the tools to hold violent criminals accountable, no matter where they are. It ensures that officers who make the ultimate sacrifice are honored with more than just words, but with real legal consequences for those who seek to harm them.

I love my job. I love serving my community. I took an oath to protect and serve, knowing the risks that come with it. But I shouldn’t have to accept that being ambushed or executed in cold blood is just part of the job.

Congress has the power to make a difference. It’s time to stand with law enforcement, to back the men and women who keep our communities safe, and to send a clear message: If you target police officers, you will face federal justice.

I implore Congress to pass the Protect and Serve Act before another officer’s name is added to the memorial wall.

Over the past few months, there has been much anxiety in the Thoroughbred racing community about legislation working its way through Tallahassee that would strip Florida’s racing permit holders of their obligation to host live races, turning them into nothing more than gaming facilities. Those of us fortunate enough to work in this industry understand that it’s a partnership, a bond, a tradition – it’s a vital part of what has defined us and this state for generations.

The proposed legislation, HB 105/SB 408, is being touted as a solution to “save” Florida Thoroughbreds. As a top trainer at Gulfstream Park, I’m here to tell you Florida racing is alive and well – but this bill could kill it.

Our $3.24 billion racing industry speaks to the way Florida-bred horses consistently appear in winners’ circles across the nation. Florida racing brings in tourists and it draws talent, with as much as 75% of all juvenile Thoroughbreds training right here in the Sunshine State.

Countless visitors attend Gulfstream Park for the Florida Derby, a key race to identify contenders amongst the dreamers in the chase for a spot in the prestigious Kentucky Derby starting gate.

These numbers illustrate Florida racing’s economic significance, but they fail to capture the true essence of what this industry means to those of us who dedicate our lives to it.

My passion for racing is about the life I’ve built alongside these extraordinary animals and the community that surrounds them. A single horse’s journey involves a dedicated team of grooms, blacksmiths, veterinarians, riders and countless others who nurture, train, and care for them.

Every day we rise early to feed, tack and train before sunup, and finish with sunsetting cool-outs, feed, and night checks – all in the pursuit of shared triumph at the finish line on Saturday. We put our hearts into these horses, and in return they teach us resilience, trust, and the deepest forms of loyalty.

To me, a horse isn’t just an athlete on a track; a horse is a best friend. There’s that indescribable bond you’ve nurtured, and the mutual trust earned. They rely on you just as much as you rely on them, and we have each other's back throughout. And when you’ve earned that trust, that’s a loyalty that can’t be matched.

That’s why it’s impossible to swallow this bill, which is being pushed under the dual falsehood of “reform” and “industry supported”. HB 105 casts racing aside in favor of slot machines and card rooms, replacing the beauty of live racing with the cold, impersonal world of gaming machines.

This bill threatens an entire industry that has long been a feather in Florida’s cap, and it undercuts years of hard work by so many of us who have dedicated our lives to these majestic animals. It’s going to hurt people like me and my family for whom the horse is lifestyle, passion and, finally, a way to make a living.

Decoupling — severing live horse racing from Florida gaming venues — undermines our commitment to these animals and the entire industry. This bill is an insult to everything we stand for. The future of Florida racing is on the line. Let’s stand together to protect it.

Saffie Joseph Jr. is a prominent trainer at Gulfstream Park, where he has trained multiple stakes-winning Thoroughbreds and remains a passionate advocate for the future of Florida horse racing.

The success of Myles Russ, head coach of Keiser University’s football team, is a powerful reminder of why where you to go to school matters. When Russ took over as head coach in January, Keiser’s Seahawks had just lost their head coach and five assistant coaches. Key players transferred, and the team had a daunting task ahead. Yet, nine months later, Keiser is celebrating its third undefeated season, a Sun Conference title, and the No. 1 seed in the NAIA playoffs. This remarkable achievement came not only from talent on the field but from a commitment to building on the university’s strong foundation—a lesson that all students can take to heart when selecting their own college.

Choosing a school isn’t just about finding a place to live for a few years. It’s about picking an environment that can shape your academic, personal, and professional trajectory in ways that extend far beyond graduation.

At Keiser, Russ’s deep knowledge of the program allowed him to maintain continuity, even as he rebuilt the team. Similarly, students choosing a college should look beyond just the campus aesthetics or location—they should consider the academic environment. A university’s rigor, its faculty, and its research opportunities are essential in determining whether a student can truly thrive in their chosen field.

Just as Keiser’s football program benefited from Russ’s prior experience, students should evaluate how well a school aligns with their academic and professional goals. Universities with strong academic cultures provide opportunities for mentorship, networking, and skill-building—elements that can transform a student’s career and academic success.

Success on the football field also depends on strong teamwork and a supportive culture. Russ’s leadership ensured the team stayed unified through a difficult transition. Similarly, students thrive when they find themselves in a campus culture that values inclusivity, engagement, and personal growth. Whether through clubs, organizations, or athletic teams, the sense of community on campus can make all the difference in a student’s academic and social life.

Students who find their “fit” in terms of campus culture are more likely to feel a sense of belonging, leading to better academic performance and a more fulfilling college experience. Schools that foster trust, collaboration, and a commitment to personal development offer the best environment for students to grow into leaders, just as Russ’s players grew under his guidance.

Keiser University’s success story also owes much to the visionary leadership of Belinda Keiser, the university’s vice chancellor. Recently recognized as one of Florida’s most influential business leaders by Florida Trend’s 2024 Florida 500, Belinda Keiser has dedicated her career to advancing education, workforce development, and social mobility. Her leadership has been instrumental in transforming Keiser University into Florida’s largest private, not-for-profit university, serving over 20,000 students at 21 campuses in Florida and internationally.

Keiser’s leadership has shaped the university’s academic environment, focusing on accessibility, community service, and innovation. Under her guidance, Keiser University has become a leader in nursing graduate production, helping address Florida’s critical healthcare workforce shortages. Through her advocacy for social mobility, Keiser has developed initiatives like the Keiser Mills Foundation, which has awarded over $72 million in scholarships, making higher education more accessible to deserving students.

Belinda Keiser’s inclusion in the Florida 500 reflects her impact beyond the classroom. Her vision for Keiser University has not only fostered growth within the institution but has also created pathways for students to succeed in a competitive job market. This kind of leadership makes Keiser University more than just a place to earn a degree—it’s an institution dedicated to shaping future leaders.

The goal for Keiser’s football program isn’t just to win games—it’s about preparing for national championships. For students, choosing the right college is also about long-term outcomes. Where you go to school can significantly impact your career trajectory. A school’s reputation, its alumni network, and its career services can open doors to internships, job opportunities, and professional connections.

At Keiser, Russ’s leadership has created opportunities for his players, just as students benefit from attending universities that offer strong career support, internships, and industry connections. It’s not just about getting a degree—it’s about ensuring that the education you receive leads to real-world opportunities.

Myles Russ’s success at Keiser University is a testament to the importance of a strong foundation, leadership, and a shared commitment to excellence. But for students, the right university can provide the same type of foundation for lifelong success. Choosing the right school is about more than just picking a place to live for a few years—it’s about finding an environment that nurtures your growth, fosters opportunities, and aligns with your long-term goals.

The American public sent a clear signal when they re-elected President Trump last November that they were tired of the economy of the past four years. High inflation rates and sluggish job growth are lingering while economic uncertainty held back investment. Now in 2025, with a narrow but complete majority in Washington, democrats must quickly work with Republicans to restore Trump-era tax reforms that have proven to work. The window to renew the 2017 tax cuts is closing.  Failing to renew them could lead to increased taxes on Florida small businesses and families.

First, some background. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) helped unburden American businesses from high tax rates. The TCJA was a historic achievement by President Trump in 2017 to help small businesses, bring back revenue from overseas, and benefit low- and middle-income families. Renewing this impactful piece of legislation will ensure its full benefits are reaped for years to come.

For the past few years, small businesses have been hamstrung by inflation with little room on the books for innovation and investment. A renewed tax cut would encourage spending on new equipment, make room to hire new employees, enact higher salaries and provide for greater investment in workers’ safety and well-being. As reported by the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council, the TCJA allowed companies to “increase U.S. investment, worker pay and benefits, their plans for new investments and expansion, and new jobs.” Small businesses are the backbone of this economy; we must ensure that our federal policies support their continued growth.

American families also stand to benefit. Lower tax rates allow families to hold on to more of their income. And while Democrats may try and argue that these tax cuts strictly benefit corporations, not families, this is categorically false. As reported by the CATO Institute, “the lowest-income Americans experienced the largest tax cuts as a portion of what people were already paying.” Further, “the lowest-income 50 percent of individuals saw a 9.3 percent reduction in their tax bill, compared to a 0.04 percent tax cut for the highest-income 1 percent.” Additionally, the TCJA would double the Child Tax Credit to $2,000. This change is particularly valuable for families in lower tax brackets.

In this increasingly competitive global marketplace, we must ensure Florida companies can put up a fair fight. If the federal government overtaxes U.S. corporations, then we are our own worst enemy. Lower taxes encourage investments in American infrastructure and businesses. A lower tax rate brings American companies, jobs, and goods closer to home.

Trump Tax Cuts

We cannot delay on renewing the TCJA. Congress has a real opportunity to deliver continued economic growth for Floridians by extending and strengthening the TCJA. Businesses and individuals need clear rules of the road to make hiring and investment decisions. If the TCJA is allowed to expire, we prolong the economic uncertainty that plagued Biden-era America.

Without the TCJA, we forgo the chance to enact an impactful and popular piece of legislation that Americans have greatly benefited from. For the benefit of all Americans, democrats and republicans should come together to extend and expand the TCJA.  The economic incentives in this plan will energize the economy and supercharge growth. Without it, we open ourselves up not only to economic decline but also national security vulnerabilities.

Regional conflict, international competition, and a global pandemic have underscored our growing need for an American-first economy. We must uplift and strengthen American-made goods and work to keep businesses and corporations within our borders.

Every day that we wait to reinstate President Trump’s Tax Cut and Jobs Act is another day that small businesses suffer under Biden’s economic legacy. The U.S. government should be the first line of defense when it comes to American small businesses, not the primary force stifling its growth. We have a golden opportunity to unleash the power of American prosperity—let’s make sure it happens.

Recently, I read an editorial supporting Puerto Rico’s statehood, which I strongly support. I appreciate that the piece noted Puerto Ricans are increasingly supporting Republicans, which challenges conventional wisdom that Puerto Rico statehood would add Democratic-leaning seats to Congress and the Electoral College. Today, statehood is an issue that both parties should get behind.

In the 2024 election, Puerto Ricans showed up for the Republican Party. Puerto Rico’s newly elected governor, Jenniffer González-Colón, is a Republican, an ally of President Trump, and an advocate for statehood. Puerto Rico’s Shadow Senator, Zoraida Buxó Santiago, is a Republican who endorsed Trump, too. In addition to voting for Republicans, the majority of the island voted for statehood status. Puerto Ricans have now chosen statehood the last four times they voted on their status.

That’s why it’s strange that Javier Hernandez wrote an anti-statehood op-ed in the same newspaper arguing that the incoming Republican majority Congress would never support Puerto Rico statehood. Given Puerto Ricans’ recent support for Trump and Republicans, I think many Republicans feel differently. Hernandez also questions the validity of Puerto Rico’s pro-statehood vote in 2024 because some voters left the question blank, but he fails to recognize that a pro-statehood candidate won the governorship.

Granting Puerto Rico statehood is not just fair—it’s now in the interest of Republican voters. It’s time for both parties to support statehood for Puerto Rico.

The Biden Administration has not held back on rulemaking and regulatory action in its final months, making sure to leave an imprint on every sector before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office for his second term. Recent actions by various bureaucrats and other functionaries of the administrative state in the waning days of the administration are nothing short of blatant government overreach.

In a push to cripple politically unfavorable sectors, the Biden administration has often targeted American oil and gas. Despite price pressures placed on inflation-weary consumers, Biden continues to push for a green energy transition, testing the limits of government authority.

Most recently, Biden issued an executive order banning new offshore drilling leases in large swaths of U.S. coastal waters. Prior to this, the Department of Energy placed a moratorium on new liquid natural gas (LNG) export permits, which threatens the economic well-being and energy security of the nation. This faced extensive bipartisan opposition and failed to hold up in court, but the Biden administration has continued to run out the clock on the legal process, appealing the ruling in clear opposition to the desires of the country.

In November, the Biden administration rushed through a study from the Department of Energy, in an attempt to make it more challenging for Trump to reverse Biden’s LNG ban. It is a clear example of how the federal government tries to weaponize bureaucratic “studies” to make claims supporting predetermined politically charged conclusions.

The abusive expansion of government control does not stop at energy, however. The Biden administration has also weaponized the administrative state to “debank” and restrict the crypto industry.

Venture capitalist Marc Andreessen recently revealed that the Biden administration has pressured financial institutions over the past few years to “debank” key executives and founders in the crypto industry, restricting the sector from accessing the banking system. Some have equated the practice to “financial redlining.”

The practice spans several federal agencies including the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, which is accused of abusing its power to pressure banks to “choke off” an entire industry. Dubbed “Operation Choke Point 2.0,” these actions -- in tandem with Biden’s SEC declaring “war on crypto”-- highlight Biden’s rampant administrative overreach disguised through bureaucratic agencies mounting control. Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse last month appeared on “60 Minutes,” where he detailed the SEC’s “war on crypto” and explained how the incoming Trump administration will take a different approach.

Even more recently, the Biden administration has declared a new administrative war, attempting to entirely rewrite federal housing regulations and malign the mortgage industry in efforts to shift blame for the housing affordability crisis that Biden has exacerbated.

In October, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit claiming that a Colorado housing appraiser engaged in racial discrimination, undervaluing a black woman’s home. The DOJ not only targeted the appraiser but tacked on the country’s biggest mortgage lender, Rocket Mortgage. That lawsuit sparked criticism from experts throughout the industry and legal scholars, who argued that mortgage lenders cannot be held responsible for the actions of an independent appraiser. The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act makes the role of the mortgage lender in appraisals clear: lenders cannot influence appraisers.

Now, Rocket Mortgage is punching back. Last month, the company sued the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD), asking courts to clarify the contradictory federal laws and DOJ enforcement actions. Rocket contends that it was only named as a defendant in the DOJ lawsuit by ambitious federal prosecutors attempting to garner media attention.

In the waning days of the administration, Biden’s bumbling bureaucracy has also mobilized a federal consumer watchdog – the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) – to further attack the mortgage industry. On Dec. 23, the CFPB sued Rocket Homes, a sister company to Rocket Mortgage, accusing the company of being part of a sprawling kickback scheme with The Jason Mitchell Group (JMG), a real estate broker. JMG Founder Jason Mitchell has since slammed the lawsuit, revealing that the CFPB offered him a settlement in exchange for turning on Rocket.

Looking at Biden’s track record, it’s clear that the administration continues to target large corporations that will score them any remaining political points before the presidency changes hands and Republican rule takes over the House, Senate, and Oval Office.

Frivolous lawsuits against the housing and mortgage industry, engaging in questionable legal actions to ban offshore drilling, and mobilizing the bureaucratic state to aggressively attack companies seen as political enemies are all indicators of Bidens’ poor final attempt to cement his legacy, regardless of the extreme abuse of power.

The incoming Trump administration should be prepared to act as quickly as possible to dismantle the lingering cases of Biden’s lawfare. Florida’s own Pam Bondi will play a key role in this as she takes over the Trump administration’s Justice Department. The Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, should provide assistance, slashing the web of bureaucratic red tape that has been woefully abused by federal agencies under Biden.

President Trump’s historic reelection was driven by issues important to voters—inflation, crime, border security, energy policy, the overreach of woke culture, and concerns about a destabilizing world order. Yet in the post-election analysis, the latter has received little attention: chaos on the world stage. From the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal to wars in Israel and Ukraine, voters witnessed a world on fire, threatening America’s security, interests, and allies. The Trump Administration now has an opportunity to deliver the strong, decisive American leadership needed more than ever.

This instability extends beyond Europe and the Middle East. Just 700 miles from Florida, Haiti is spiraling into chaos. A stable Haiti can serve as a cornerstone of America First foreign policy—protecting our borders, addressing the drivers of narcotics and asylum seekers, and advancing U.S. interests abroad.

Amusingly, Biden Administration bureaucrats are already spinning revisionist history, attempting to frame their failures in Haiti as successes. In a recent Miami Herald op-ed, “The Biden-Harris Legacy in the Western Hemisphere, Backyard to Florida,” they promote their foreign policy mantra: “partnership is power.” In practice, this has meant surrendering American influence under the guise of partnership, sacrificing national security, interests, and values. This failure serves as a cautionary tale for the Trump Administration, which can address systemic issues by dismantling State Department incentive structures that reward officials for compromising American interests abroad.

The Biden legacy in Haiti is clear. Since the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse on July 7, 2021, gangs funded by international drug cartels have terrorized Haiti, seizing control of vast regions, raping, murdering, kidnapping, and displacing civilians. Over 4.7 million people live under gang rule, subjected to terror tactics like “collective rapes.” The toll is staggering: 702,000 Haitians are internally displaced, 5.6 million face starvation, and in 2023 alone, there were 1,971 kidnappings and 4,789 murders—figures likely underreported.

Today, Haiti’s infrastructure is crumbling, with ports in disarray and commercial flights to Port-au-Prince indefinitely suspended. If this is “success,” one shudders to imagine how the Biden-Harris Administration might define failure.

Haiti’s crisis has broader implications. A destabilized Haiti not only fuels narcotics and asylum seekers to U.S. borders but also provides China and Russia opportunities to exploit the chaos and expand their influence in the Western Hemisphere. To protect American interests, the Trump Administration should prioritize Haiti and focus on three key elements: security, targeted humanitarian aid, and governance reform.

While Biden’s State Department worsened the situation by meddling in Haiti’s affairs, blocking local solutions, and aligning the U.S. with corrupt oligarchs whose cronyism perpetuates instability, the Trump Administration has a tremendous opportunity to bring accountability to Haiti’s ruling elites. These oligarchs, who benefit by prostituting their country to drug cartels, must be held to account. By pursuing low-cost, high-impact strategies, the Trump Administration can stabilize Haiti and prevent a narco-controlled, failed state on America’s doorstep.

The first step is restoring security. Haiti’s national police and military are under-resourced, and Biden’s 400-man Kenyan-led mission was never a legitimate stabilizing measure. Contracting private military companies (PMCs) offers an expeditious and cost-effective solution without deploying U.S. troops or ensnaring America in a long-term quagmire. PMCs bring expertise in urban combat, intelligence, and operational support, enabling Haitian forces to reclaim critical infrastructure, including ports, roads, and airports. This approach offers a pragmatic way to stabilize Haiti and improve U.S. border security—stemming the flow of narcotics and asylum seekers without prolonged entanglements.

Addressing Haiti’s humanitarian crisis is equally critical to stemming the drivers of migration to the U.S. Half the country’s children suffer from chronic malnutrition, and most in Port-au-Prince have not attended school in six years. Gang violence has severed access to life-saving aid, worsening the suffering of millions. Reclaiming infrastructure and restoring security will allow aid deliveries to resume and essential services to restart. Once security and infrastructure are reclaimed, NGOs can return, multiplying public efforts with critical resources.

Finally, reform is imperative. Haiti’s entrenched corruption and cronyism must be dismantled through targeted governance reforms and accountability measures. For too long, DC-based technocrats have compromised with the very leaders prostituting their country to the highest bidder. Pragmatic accountability measures can dismantle the oligarchic stronghold while upholding America First principles. Realigning Haitian leadership with the needs of its people and prosecuting those who aid narco-terrorists and profit from the chaos is not only possible but necessary. With security and reform, displaced Haitian immigrants will feel safe to return home.

Haiti stands at a critical crossroads. Without decisive leadership, the U.S. risks allowing an entrenched narco-state to take root just 700 miles from its shores—dominated by cartel-backed insurgents and manipulated by foreign adversaries like China and Russia. These powers exploit Haiti’s chaos to expand their influence in the Western Hemisphere, undermining U.S. security and regional stability. Restoring order in Haiti is not only a matter of humanitarian necessity but also a strategic imperative grounded in the principles of the Monroe Doctrine to protect American interests.

Stabilizing Haiti through effective measures, such as contracting PMCs, provides a cost-effective and expeditious opportunity to reaffirm American strength, secure our borders, and stem the flow of narcotics and mass migration. This is a decisive step toward protecting U.S. interests and ensuring stability in our hemisphere.

For weeks versions of this article have been submitted and denied, one of which was submitted to the Miami Herald and has some alarming similarities to a recent piece by James Foley. Nevertheless, we are encouraged that Haiti is getting the attention it deserves not just for the sake of the millions suffering at the hands of narco-funded gangs, but because of the significant risk it poses to American security in the region.

Austin Holmes, a Florida native and former Haitian resident, has extensive experience directing high-stakes humanitarian efforts, crisis management operations and disaster response efforts in Haiti and the Caribbean. Notable achievements include coordinating relief efforts for over 750,000 Haitians after Hurricane Matthew, negotiating the rescue of numerous kidnap victims, and overseeing the evacuation of U.S. citizens and vulnerable populations from crisis zones.

Opinion by The Floridian's Jackson Bakich

President-elect Donald Trump (R) completed one of, if not the greatest, political comebacks in history this election cycle. His opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris (D), dealt with unique circumstances that put her at an immediate disadvantage. However, she made a critical mistake at the very end of her campaign relating to the Joe Rogan podcast debacle.

I’m going to break it down with a sports lens. It was a coaching blunder in both scheme and philosophy.

Anyone can share their rationale as to why somebody or some group failed in their mission after the conclusion of their endeavor. “Monday morning quarterbacking” is the term in the sports world.

President Teddy Roosevelt pointed this out in his famous “Man in the Arena” passage. It’s easy to criticize the athletes from the outside or in the stands. Also, a lot of times, said rationales don’t provide the proper context for defeat in its entirety.

That’s why my analysis of her decision not to go on the Joe Rogan podcast is not the sole reason she lost the election. It may have been a small reason, but it is a reason, nonetheless.

Most importantly, I believe it was the wrong decision then, and it’s the wrong decision now.

Report: Harris Internal Polling Was Poor

The Joe Rogan Experience is by far the biggest podcast in the world, with tens of millions of listeners. It’s listed as the number one program in almost every podcast popularity list. Its cultural relevance is unlike any other.

If recent reports are correct and the Harris campaign’s internal polling showed that she never had a lead over Trump, then not going on the show simply doesn’t make any sense.

It defies any competitive logic that certainly makes sense in the sports world.

The 4th and 1 Metaphor

Let’s say you’re the coach of a football team (or, in this case, a campaign manager). You’re down three points with two minutes left on the clock and no timeouts. You’re on your opponent’s 40-yard line faced with a 4th and 1. Overtime isn’t an option in this scenario.

The safe play (not going on Joe Rogan) – as public speaking was certainly not VP Harris’ strong suit – would be to kick the field goal. From the 40-yard line, there isn’t a great chance you make the field goal, but it gives you and your team the best chance not to lose.

The obvious reality is that going on Rogan gives you the best chance to win.

Why? Well, from a schematic, political standpoint, Trump had already appeared on the podcast. He proved he could withstand three hours of non-scripted conversation. Remember, Rogan himself stated that he offered Harris to come on the show but she turned it down. She wanted Rogan to come to her and for it to only last an hour.

Moving the goalposts is not a good look.

With this metaphor, going for it on 4th and 1 is the right move philosophically, too.

Why? Well, if you can’t advance the ball one yard, then you don’t deserve to win the ball game. If you can’t go on a podcast and have a conversation with someone for a few hours (which normal people do every day), then you don’t deserve to win the ball game. If you can’t use the three hours allotted to you and share your vision for America as the next leader of the Free World, then you don’t deserve to win the ball game.

This was a coaching blunder. A political miscalculation. It’s as simple as that.

Was Failing To Appear On Joe Rogan A Nail In The Coffin For Harris?

Once again, this wasn’t the sole reason Harris lost every single battleground state. It’s possible that a solid appearance on Rogan wouldn’t have moved the needle at all.

She was dealt a raw deal. The short end of the stick. A six versus an ace.

Having just 107 days to run was a significant disadvantage to Harris. Coupling the short amount of time with the failure to distance herself from the unpopular incumbent, Joe Biden, made it nearly an impossible feat to begin with.

However, the decision not to go on Rogan needs to be remembered by future political candidates and their campaigns. Not because it was some monumental nail in the coffin but because it lacks the combination of both humility and boldness necessary to be a competitor in the final moments:

If my team cannot prevail when it matters most, then we don’t deserve to win. If my team can’t gain a yard when it matters most, then we don’t deserve to win.

It’s as simple as that.

Dear Editor,

In the post-covid world, inflationary pressure is driving up medical costs for the average patient.  This is causing basic medical insurance to be unaffordable for the average consumer, and I can see the pain as people have to make tough decisions about which bills they are and are not going to pay.

As a nursing professional, I know how much money it is costing hospitals, and doctors, and nurses to provide basic healthcare needs.  I also hear complaints about the number of tests being performed on patients that think are perhaps unnecessary.  Some of this is necessary if only for the legal protection of the medical personnel who are seeing the patient.  Doctors and nurses live with a constant threat hanging over their heads that if medicine is not practiced perfectly, a certain lawsuit will follow.

Administering healthcare is not an exact science.  Each patient is different, and every scenario is different.  Expanding medical legal protections, especially for those working in the most high risk and volatile cases would seem to be a tool to bring down the cost of healthcare and healthcare insurance while also encouraging more doctors and nurses to move to Florida and also help solve our personnel shortage crisis.

By U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL)

For the first time in half a century, voters across the country are making decisions about one of the most divisive issues in modern American politics: abortion. Or more accurately, at what stage in pregnancy it is acceptable to end the life of an unborn child.

I am unapologetically pro-life because it is our most fundamental right. Without life, the freedom of speech, assembly, and all the other rights we cherish are impossible. But I also recognize that this is not an easy issue. Many would-be moms find themselves in heartbreaking situations, and the question of how we regulate abortion creates an inherent conflict between two rights: the right of the mother and the right of her baby to live.

These are not easy conversations, and policy decisions should not be taken lightly, but we owe it to all of those who are yet to be born to have an honest conversation. Unfortunately, proponents of Amendment 4 are deliberately misleading Floridians about the sweeping nature of the proposed amendment.

It's worth asking yourself – and your friends, family, and neighbors  – what do you really know about Amendment 4?

Let’s start with the facts. Amendment 4 would allow abortion on demand, for virtually any reason, right up until the moment of birth. It would gut Florida’s parental consent law, remove safety standards that protect women, and open the door to mandatory taxpayer-funded abortion.

No Limits. While the amendment mentions “viability,” which is typically considered around 24 weeks, the term is undefined. What’s more, “viability” is followed by “or when necessary,” which creates a massive loophole that, when combined with other undefined terms, allows abortions for virtually any reason, up until the moment of birth.

No Parents. In 2020, Florida passed a law requiring parental consent for an abortion to be performed on a minor. Parental consent is the norm for every health care procedure, even prescribing acne medication to teens. Only 29 percent of voters oppose parental consent laws for abortion. However, Amendment 4 only allows for parental notification. It would prohibit parental consent because that would create an unlawful “delay.”

No Safety. The amendment does not require a medical doctor to approve an abortion after viability. Instead, Amendment 4 empowers a “healthcare provider” to make those life-and-death decisions. Under Florida law, that could mean anyone from the clinic receptionist to a physical therapist or a nutritionist.

No Guardrails. What’s more, the amendment would prohibit any law that “delays or restricts” abortion. Commonsense safety standards could be considered illegal, but so too could the lack of taxpayer funding. For example, the ACLU – a major backer of Amendment 4 – is suing to overturn Michigan’s ban on taxpayer-funding for abortions because it “delays” access to abortion.

These are undeniable facts, but before you vote, consider what this issue is about at its core:

At 6 weeks, an unborn baby’s heart begins to beat.

At 10 weeks, arms, hands, fingers, feet, and toes are fully formed.

At 15 weeks, your baby can feel pain.

At 21 weeks, your baby has a 50 percent chance of survival if they are born prematurely.

And at 39 weeks, Amendment 4 would legalize that baby’s death.

Almost no one – fewer than 10 percent of Americans – believes a fully developed baby should be aborted. No matter what you think of Florida’s current law, Amendment 4 is extreme and wrong.

Please, vote no on Amendment 4.

Puerto Rican music star Bad Bunny is the latest artist to garner attention for political involvement during this campaign season.  The rapper, singer, and producer has been behind a series of political billboard advertisements in his home of Puerto Rico.  Not terribly unusual at first, until reports that the reggaeton star’s political connections extend to Nicolás Maduro’s oppressive and corrupt regime in Venezuela.

A recent report revealed that Bad Bunny’s record label, Rimas Entertainment, previously received millions of dollars from Maduro’s Venezuela to help grow the label.  Nina Valedón Santiago, a politician and Senate candidate for one of Puerto Rico's major political parties, the Popular Democratic Party (Partido Popular Democrático, or PPD), called for the FBI to investigate the connection between Rimas and the Maduro government as “interfering in the democratic process of Puerto Rico and the United States.”[1][2]

Valedon’s call lends further credibility to the pushback in that the ads Bad Bunny financed actually criticized the island’s New Progressive Party (Partido Nuevo Progresista, or PNP), the generally pro-statehood party.  “We cannot allow money from oppressive and corrupt regimes to influence our society. In Puerto Rico, unlike Venezuela, we all have freedom of expression. It is our responsibility to protect democracy and the freedom of our people,” Valedón stated.

If the allegations are true, the financial connection between Rimas and Maduro’s socialist regime has some troubling implications for Puerto Rico’s self-determination and perhaps even broader U.S. national security.

Foreign adversaries interfering in the democratic processes of other countries with a goal of harming the United States is not new.  Oppressive regimes have previously worked to destabilize Cuba, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and others, often by employing a variety of influence tactics including funding political movements.

But these allegations coming to light in a U.S. territory like Puerto Rico is alarming.  Serious instability in Puerto Rico would be a significant boon to our foreign adversaries, with both economic and national security implications.

At the root of the reported connection between Rimas and Venezuela is Rafael Jiménez Dan, the label’s co-founder and a former vice minister under the late Hugo Chávez’s authoritarian government.  Jiménez Dan was a major financial backer of Rimas, allegedly using money many believe he amassed during his time under Chávez.  Of course, he maintains that his investments were legitimate and that he had no contact with Bad Bunny or any other Rimas artists.

Just as on the mainland, Puerto Rico faces some important choices in November.  The election includes a gubernatorial race as well as a plebiscite on the island’s political status—always a contentious issue.  The head of the PPD distanced himself from Valedón’s statements, as well as the general allegations, and others within the party defended Bad Bunny’s right to express his political opinions.

But the reporting and claims are sobering enough to warrant further investigation.  A potential security threat should be dismissed as an internal party dispute without thorough vetting, regardless of the popularity of the central figure involved.

The downward slide of the pro-commonwealth PPD is creating political uncertainty on the island.  It is the type of upheaval that history shows provides an opening of which bad actors with undemocratic motives often take advantage.  The potential influence of foreign-backed money in Puerto Rico undermines both the American citizens of Puerto Rico’s interests, as well as the United States’ generally.

Let’s be clear: Bad Bunny has the right to exercise his political beliefs and should not be criticized for doing so.  But the questions about connections to a regime as hostile as Maduro’s in Venezuela should not be swept under the rug.  An FBI investigation, as called for by concerned Puerto Rican officials, might be a necessary step to ensure transparency and protect the integrity of the Puerto Rico’s elections.

While Bad Bunny's music has brought global attention and acclaim to Puerto Rico, his label’s political ties raise serious concerns.  Foreign interference in American elections, whether on the mainland or in Puerto Rico, are a threat to democracy.  All Americans deserve to know that it will be their voice, not that of a foreign government, that will be the decisive factor on election day.

Mario H. Lopez is the President of the Hispanic Leadership Fund, a public policy advocacy organization that promotes liberty, opportunity, and prosperity for all.

Last week in Miami at FIU’s campus, Senator Rick Scott organized a roundtable discussion with Jewish and non-Jewish leaders to facilitate a conversation about the dangerous rise of Antisemitism in Florida, calling the coalition “Floridians Against Antisemitism”. The event was attended by State Rep. Randy Fine, local mayors, prominent Rabbis and Pastors.

I was honored to participate in the roundtable and I must say, it was so refreshing to see the Senator, who is not Jewish, talk about why fighting Antisemitism is so important to him.

In an era where global tensions and domestic divisions run high, it is essential to recognize leaders who have consistently stood up for values that transcend political divides. Senator Scott is one such leader, particularly when it comes to his steadfast commitment to fighting antisemitism and his unwavering support for the State of Israel.

In both the U.S. Senate and during his tenure as Florida’s governor, Senator Scott demonstrated an unflinching dedication to ensuring that the Jewish community feels protected and that Israel remains secure on the global stage.

Senator Scott has made it clear that hatred against Jews has no place in America, taking meaningful steps to combat antisemitism at every level throughout his political career. He has pushed for stronger enforcement of laws targeting hate crimes and has been a vocal proponent of educating the public on the dangers of antisemitic rhetoric and actions.

It’s my belief that for Senator Scott, this fight is not just about condemning words; it’s about ensuring that antisemitism is rooted out wherever it appears.

Additionally, Scott has recognized that antisemitism cannot be fought solely within the borders of the United States. He has urged global leaders to be vigilant, particularly in addressing antisemitic actions perpetrated by state actors and terrorist organizations. In this way, Scott has positioned himself as a leader not just nationally, but globally, in the battle against hate.

When it comes to Israel, the Senator has never flinched in supporting the world’s only Jewish state; Israel and he has taken a lot of pushback from the far left.

Just today, the Senator’s DC office was vandalized and the Senator responded by posting the image to social media saying “I’ve got news for whoever did this: we won’t be intimidated. Iran-backed Hamas brutally murdered Israelis & Americans. Hamas is evil & Florida will ALWAYS stand with Israel.”

We all know that Israel is one of America’s strongest allies, and Senator Rick Scott has been one of the U.S. Senate’s most consistent voices in support of the Jewish state. His commitment to Israel’s security, sovereignty, and prosperity is unwavering. Having made several trips to Israel, he saw firsthand the country’s security challenges and its strategic importance to both the United States and the Middle East.

In addition to combating Antisemitism and supporting Israel, another key area where Senator Scott has demonstrated his commitment to Israel is his unyielding stance against the Islamic Republic of Iran, a country that poses one of the most significant threats to Israel's security.

Senator Scott has consistently opposed efforts to appease the Iranian regime, recognizing that its nuclear ambitions and support for terrorist organizations like Hezbollah threaten not only Israel but the entire region.

Scott has been critical of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, believing it offered Iran too many concessions while failing to ensure lasting security for Israel. Instead, he has called for a tougher approach to Iran, one that ensures the regime can never develop a nuclear weapon. His advocacy for imposing stronger sanctions on Iran reflects his broader commitment to curbing terrorism and protecting Israel from existential threats.

Senator Scott’s record on supporting Israel and fighting antisemitism is both comprehensive and deeply personal. In a world where Antisemitism continues to rear its ugly head, and where Israel’s security remains precarious, Senator Scott’s leadership on these issues has been a beacon of steadfastness and one the Jewish community is very grateful for.

Through his legislative efforts, his international advocacy, and his consistent moral clarity, Senator Scott has proven himself to be one of the most reliable allies of the Jewish community and the State of Israel. I am honored to endorse Senator Scott for re-election to the U.S. Senate.

By Rep. Matt Gaetz (R)

Kamala Harris has been Vice President for more than three years. As Cactus Jack Garner, FDR’s Vice President once famously quipped: The job is “not worth a bucket of warm piss.” When she rarely comes out of her box to do softball interviews, she leverages the mushy role of the Veep to both claim credit for things she didn’t do (like exiting Afghanistan, although she has “no regrets” over the deaths during the botched withdrawal) and blames others for things she was supposed to do but didn’t (like being “Border Czar” and fixing the illegal immigration invasion).

So while it’s a mushy job and she hasn’t had any real responsibilities or experience, there is only one important constitutional role the Vice President does play: presiding over the Senate and casting tie-breaking votes. And boy, does she brag about being the tie-breaking vote to pass the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA). It’s true: Without Harris, the IRA wouldn’t be law. But frankly, it would be better for seniors in America if Harris had never been Vice President.

Why? Well, under the IRA, which is now law, Democrats added out-of-pocket caps on Medicare Part D costs. Sounds great, right? But the caps can’t work by themselves. It does no good to a senior to have prices for insulin be capped at $35 per month if the premium doubles or triples. You’re saving a few bucks a month in order to spend hundreds more per year for coverage—robbing Peter to pay Paul.

But this is exactly how Kamala Harris’ IRA has worked. In 2024 alone, Biden’s own Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported that premiums were up 21 percent. And Biden’s own CMS reported that in 2025, the bid rates would spike another 180 percent. We know that the Biden-Harris administration has reason to hide the ball, and their own numbers showing Medicare Part D premiums increasing 57 percent per year is probably a low estimate. Seniors are about to get hit, right after the election, and hit hard.

But it gets worse. Every year, CMS releases estimated premiums for plans under Medicare at the very end of July. Every year! Not this year, though. It wouldn’t be convenient to show that the Biden-Harris policies that are responsible for $4 and $5 gas, increased heating-oil prices, and increased prices of groceries are also going to be responsible for the largest effective hike of prescription-drug prices for seniors in history. So this year, CMS didn’t release the information that seniors rely upon to plan their Medicare Part D enrollment. Rather, they announced an unlawful “demonstration program” to shovel out additional cash to hide the price hike—until after the election. But they didn’t release the price guides.

And that demonstration program won’t last forever, and prices are going to balloon. As the Committee to Unleash Prosperity noted: “Medicare’s drug program is suddenly under severe financial stress, with insurers to exit the market and seniors to lose coverage unless insurers are bailed out tens of billions of dollars. The ‘root cause’ is the IRA.”

It’s not just prices: Since Harris’ tie-breaking vote to pass the IRA, at least 36 research programs into drugs and at least 21 drugs have been abandoned. According to a University of Chicago study, this will rob Americans of 135 life-saving medicines over the next 15 years.

But hey, “out-of-pocket” caps, right? America’s seniors deserve better than this.

As I reflect on my recent run for Congress, I am filled with a deep sense of purpose and determination. This journey was not just about seeking a seat in the halls of power to effect much-needed change in our nation — it was about standing up for the values that make America the greatest nation on earth. While the outcome of this race may not have been what we hoped for, the fight for our country's future is far from over and I will never stop fighting for all of us.

I entered this race because I believe that our nation is at a critical crossroads. We are facing unprecedented challenges, from the erosion of our constitutional rights to the unchecked rise of big government. But what concerned me most was the lack of principled leadership in Washington—leaders who are willing to stand up for the American people, even when it's not politically convenient.

Throughout my campaign, I spoke with countless Americans who shared these concerns. They are tired of career politicians who prioritize their own interests over the needs of their constituents. They are frustrated with a government that spends recklessly, leaving our children and grandchildren to bear the burden of our debt. And they are worried about the direction our country is headed, as radical agendas threaten the very foundations of our republic and our Judeo-Christian values.

Bryan Leib
Bryan Leib

National security was a critical issue during my campaign. In a world that is becoming increasingly dangerous, we must have leaders who are committed to protecting America and our allies. That means taking a tough stance against our adversaries, whether it's confronting China's economic aggression or holding Iran accountable for its destabilizing actions in the Middle East. It also means standing with Israel, our closest ally in the region, and ensuring that our military remains the strongest and most capable force on the planet.

But this campaign was about more than just policy positions. It was about restoring the trust between the American people and their government. It was about reminding us all that the power in this country belongs to the people, not the politicians. That is why I refused to be beholden to special interests or party elites. I ran a campaign that was focused on the issues that matter to everyday Americans, not the agendas of the Washington establishment.

While the election may be over, the movement we started is not and the +7,000 voters we brought to the table are just getting started! I remain committed to the principles that guided my campaign—limited government, a strong national defense, term limits, standing with law enforcement and veterans, and unwavering support for the State of Israel. I will continue to be a voice for these values, whether it is in the political arena or as a private citizen.

To all those who supported my campaign, I want to say thank you. Your belief in our cause and your dedication to our shared values mean the world to me. Together, we have shown that there is a demand for principled, conservative leadership in this country from my generation. And while we may not have won this battle, we have laid the groundwork for future victories

The fight for America's future is far from over. I remain as committed as ever to standing up for the values that make our country great. I hope you will continue to join me in this fight, because together, we can ensure that America remains a beacon of freedom, opportunity, and prosperity for generations to come.

In the Biden-Harris economyAmericans have to do more with less while eliminating nonessentials. The government can do the same. As chairman of the State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs Subcommittee, which is responsible for funding our national security and foreign policy priorities, I have taken a scalpel to government spending.

The SFOPS bill for fiscal 2025 cuts an unprecedented 11% on top of the cuts included in last year’s bill, which is now law. With these cuts, we would save American taxpayers $7.6 billion over the next fiscal year.

Prioritizing national security must be the paramount guiding principle in determining our foreign affairs budget. But when Americans entrust us with their hard-earned tax dollars, we must always ask the tough questions.

Does providing billions to support a radical climate change agenda without measurable results, which depends on manufacturing that occurs in communist China, further national security?

Does funding the antisemitic, anti-American United Nations Relief and Works Agency, which employs Hamas terrorists and propagates hatred against Jews, promote our values?

Does sending millions to the so-called United Nations Human Rights Council, which includes Cuba, China, and other regimes with some of the world’s worst human rights records, advance our national security?

Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart
Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart

Does funding non-governmental organizations that facilitate illegal immigration to our southern border benefit hard-working American families?

What about funding overseas abortions and transgender procedures?

Does providing funding for labs controlled by adversarial regimes in Iran, China, Cuba, Venezuela, Russia, or North Korea make sense?

Does funding a misguided Iran deal that weakens sanctions without approval by Congress and funds special envoys that have neither been authorized by Congress nor confirmed by the Senate promote our national security?

I believe the answer to all these questions is a resounding “no.” As I have said repeatedly, if you are a friend or ally of the United States, then the SFOPS bill supports you. However, if you are an enemy or an adversary of the United States, then the likelihood is you will not like this bill.

The fiscal 2025 SFOPS bill would support our friends and allies that help advance our joint national security interests. For example, the bill fully funds the Memorandum of Understanding with Israel at $3.3 billion. It encourages the State Department to use its resources to support the Abraham Accords and to secure the return of the hostages held by Hamas since Oct. 7. The bill also requires vetting of funded NGOs to ensure they do not participate in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions movement against Israel.

The bill also provides $2.1 billion to advance U.S. interests in the Indo-Pacific, helping our allies in Asia counter increasing Chinese aggression in the region. The bill provides $400 million to the Countering PRC Influence Fund and $500 million in foreign military financing for Taiwan for self-defense from communist China. It also supports pro-American democracies in our hemisphere, such as Panama and Costa Rica, and requires foreign energy support to be directed toward European allies working to become independent of Russian energy.

I have long been a fierce proponent of democracy assistance, which supports courageous freedom activists in the most repressed corners of the globe. They and their oppressors should know that America stands with those in the struggle for freedom. However, we must be smart about it.

In Venezuela, for example, the people are doing all they can to oust their dictator, President Nicolas Maduro, along with his thugs and the Cuban intelligence agents supporting him, after he upended the country’s democratic election in July. The fiscal 2025 SFOPS bill provides $50 million for promoting democratic change in Venezuela, but the bill conditions funding on reestablishing democracy and freedom in Venezuela. While I strongly support U.S. assistance for the cause of freedom, I do not support squandering U.S. taxpayer dollars on unilateral concessions to brutal dictatorships or paths that have no hope of advancing genuine democratic change.

The bill also provides $35 million for democracy assistance to Cuba to support human rights and former political prisoners, plus an additional $35 million to provide outside, objective information through the Office of Cuba Broadcasting.

We can achieve all of this and more while still spending 11% less than the previous year. Gone are the days of blank checks and blind acquiescence to the status quo. Under my watch, I will work to ensure a foreign policy that promotes our key national security interests, supports our allies in confronting mutual adversaries, and stands with those struggling for freedom.

This crucial bill, H.R.8771, was passed by the House in June. I urge you to read the text, learn how it advances our priorities, and work with me to ensure these important provisions are approved by the Senate and signed into law.

The consequential 2024 presidential election between former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Kamala Harris will be decided on November 5 and, as most public opinion polls show that Trump and Harris are neck-and-neck in the race, it appears as if Democrats and their amigos in the media are pulling out all the stops to help the Harris campaign appear to stay above the political water line.

The Real Clear Politics average of polls shows Harris leading Trump by 1.4 percentage points. In contrast, at this same time in 2020, President Joe Biden led Trump by 7.5 percentage points.

According to Jose Delgado of Spanish language news site, El Nuevo Dia, the election is all but over and Latinos are going to come out in droves to vote for Harris and her pro-tax agenda.

Delgado, who has in the past written similar pieces that appear to lean in favor of Democrats and Democratic causes, cites new polling by the UnidosUs organization and BPS Research that shows 57% of Puerto Rican voters breaking for Harris, while only 31% support Trump.

In addition, it is suggested that if Puerto Ricans voting on the island of Puerto Rico were exclusively considered, support for Harris would jump to 62%, and support for Trump would drop to 29%.

“In November, in Puerto Rico there will be a symbolic vote between Harris and Trump. In general, Latinos favor Harris over Trump by a ratio of 59% to 31% ahead of the November 5 election, according to the poll,” stated Delgado.

Delgado also states that Harris leads Trump with Puerto Ricans by a large margin in the swing state of Pennsylvania and that Mexican-born voters (legal voters we assume) back Harris, but that “Cubans” are evenly split (47%) between the two candidates.

Huh?

Cuban-American voters are considering Harris by such a large number?

According to the story, Democrats need to win the Latino vote by a 2 to 1 margin to win the presidency.

The Survey

It’s important to understand the poll and who is behind its commissioning.

The poll of 3,000 potential Latino voters was conducted between August 5-23.

Most polls are conducted with “likely voters” for better accuracy.

The survey Delgado writes about doesn’t, and it only surveyed 2,800 voters who were actually registered to cast a vote.

The devil is in the details, right?

Of those polled, only 543 (109 born on the island) Puerto Ricans responded, which is only about 18% of the entire 3,000 sample, and it was largely sampled in states other than Florida.

“In the case of Puerto Rican voters, the total number of respondents reached 543, around 18% of the total number of people interviewed. Of these, 109 were born in Puerto Rico. The poll has larger sample sizes in Texas, Pennsylvania, Arizona, California, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina,” states the El Nuevo Dia story.

In all seriousness, how could Delgado post a story about how Puerto Ricans are backing Harris over Trump if only 543 were surveyed, and of those, who knows how many were actually registered to vote?

It gets better.

Who commissioned the poll that appears to try to convince voters that Harris is overwhelmingly garnering the Puerto Rican amigo vote?

Enter the Progressive Hispanic establishment.

The aforementioned UnidosUS partnered up with BSP Research to do the poll.

Delgado also references another poll conducted on August 19 by the Hispanic Federation and Latino Victory Foundation.

All four of these groups or organizations promote a progressive pro-immigrant and Latino agenda.

Latino Victory has already endorsed Harris, and the Hispanic Foundation openly promotes the debunked “LatinX” identity initiative and other progressive agenda items.

Again, how can these polls be taken seriously considering that they are backed by partisan organizations with an apparent agenda?

Why wasn’t the slant divulged in the El Nuevo Dia story?

What are other polls saying?

The poll of 1,138 Puerto Rican voters was conducted by Gaither International and suggests that if President Biden (D) remained in the race, President Trump would have beaten him by 14 points with 44% of the vote to Biden's 30%.

However, with Vice President Harris now replacing Biden after the first debate between him and Trump, the gap was quickly sealed, as Harris gained a slight edge of 39% to Trump's 38%, which Gaither noted was essentially a tie.

The majority of Latino voters will most likely vote for Harris over Trump, but, like El Nuevo Dia states, Democrats need Latinos to come out 2 to 1 for them to retain the White House.

If Latinos come out and vote for Republicans and President Trump a smidge more than they have historically done in past presidential elections, Harris’s current 1.4% lead over Trump is gone.

As a veteran with a lot of friends who are a part of that same community living on fixed retirement income, I can always see how frustrated they are every time they are hit with another increase in their cost of living. For the last several years, the single biggest issue for them has been the cost of homeowner’s insurance.

I fully understand that there are many factors beyond the legislature’s control on this issue. Rising prices for everything – including home replacement – are crushing everyone. With that being said, there are a few things that we can control that needs to be addressed in the state legislature.

The first is fraud. If we can stop insurance fraud in South Florida, it will tremendously impact reducing the price of insurance statewide. The second is litigation. The legislature already addressed big chunks of litigation issues back in 2023. But we need to do more. Maybe third-party financing reform. Third-party financing is a provision for third parties to actually fund lawsuits.

Sounds reasonable until you find out that the financing agent could be a part of an international investment team and that the plaintiff becomes somewhat of a pawn for the lawsuit team.

If we can deal with the fraud issue and continue to chip away at lawsuit reform, it is possible that Florida can once again become the sunshine state for everyone – not just those who are not on fixed income.
