President Donald Trump recently designated sundry drug cartels operating in Mexico as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO).

Designating the cartels as FTOs was one of President Trump’s campaign promises, and it was something conservatives had long urged former President Joe Biden to do to no avail.

The cartels designated are Tren de Aragua, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), Cártel de Sinaloa, Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación, Cártel del Noreste (formerly Los Zetas), La Nueva Familia Michoacana, Cártel de Golfo (Gulf Cartel), and Cárteles Unidos.

The FTO designation expands financial sanctions against the cartels and authorizes the use of military force against them.

Elon Musk took to social media to speak about the designation, alleging it could result in “drone strikes” against the cartels.

The use of military force against cartels operating in Mexico is unlikely, however, as Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum has opposed the idea and criticized it as a violation of Mexico’s sovereignty.

"The Mexican people will not accept under any circumstances interventions, interference or any other act from abroad that could be harmful to the integrity, independence and sovereignty of the nation," said President Sheinbaum.

Sheinbaum also claimed she would study the possibility of erecting constitutional reforms to further protect Mexico’s sovereignty.

State Department Secretary Marco Rubio explained the FTO designation is intended to “protect our nation, the American people, and our hemisphere.”

“That means stopping the campaigns of violence and terror by these vicious groups both in the United States and internationally,” said Secretary Rubio. “These designations provide law enforcement additional tools to stop these groups.”

Tren de Aragua, MS-13, and the Sinaloa cartels are perhaps the most infamous groups, especially given their increased activity in the US during President Biden’s administration.

Biden took certain actions against the cartels, such as designating Tren de Aragua as a transnational criminal organization (TCO).

Tren de Aragua is Venezuela’s largest gang with an estimated 5,000 members and has recently been linked to numerous criminal investigations in the US and Mexico.

The Trump Administration’s decision to revoke Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for over 500,000 Venezuelans has sparked outrage among South Florida lawmakers and activists who argue that sending exiles back to Nicolás Maduro’s regime will only worsen the ongoing humanitarian crisis, while experts argue this would increase migration.

Repatriation flights to Venezuela resumed on February 10th, raising concerns about broader U.S. policy towards Venezuela.

Many Republicans are calling for a return to the "maximum pressure" strategy that President Donald Trump (R) promoted during his first term. Secretary of State Marco Rubio (R) and Special Envoy for Latin America Mauricio Clever-Carone have voiced a similar hardline approach, but critics argue that returning to the “maximum pressure” approach would only cripple the Venezuelan economy without achieving regime change.

Doral Vice Mayor Maureen Porras, who's expressed disagreement with ending TPS, believes that the U.S. should continue to "apply pressure" while noting the complexity of the situation.

"The most recent pressure campaign was not effective in getting political change in Venezuela, but neither was the easing of sanctions," Vice Mayor Porras told The Floridian in an exclusive interview. "Regardless, we should continue to apply the pressure on Venezuela."

University of Colorado economist Francisco Rodriguez found that reinstating maximum pressure sanctions could drive 1 million more Venezuelans to flee over the next five years. His study further suggests that 4 million Venezuelans would have remained in their country had U.S. sanctions not been imposed.

Rodriguez, in a recent op-ed for The Hill, argued that returning to the strategy “would do nothing more than punish millions of Venezuelans who should not bear the burden for Maduro’s atrocities.”

“Rather than weaken Maduro,” Rodriguez wrote in the op-ed, “sanctions have strengthened his position, enabling his concentration of power and consolidation of ties with America’s adversaries. As U.S. companies have exited Venezuela, they have been replaced by actors from China, Russia and Iran, further entrenching Maduro’s regime and reducing U.S. influence in the region.”

Similarly, Venezuelan professor Luis Pedro España warns that resuming oil-related sanctions could dramatically increase poverty, echoing the conditions from 2017 to 2020, when 94% of Venezuelans lived in poverty and 2.5 million households fell into economic despair.

Florida Reps. Carlos Gimenez (R), Mario Diaz-Balart (R), Maria Elvira Salazar (R), Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D), and Weston Commissioner Fabio Andrade are among the locals who also disagree with ending TPS.

Rep. Gimenez has urged Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to ensure Venezuelans fleeing communism receive protection, emphasizing that not all Venezuelans should be stigmatized due to criminal elements like the Tren de Aragua gang. Rep. Diaz-Balart has similarly pressed Secretary Noem to prevent the forced return of Venezuelans without criminal records to a "repressive dictatorship."

"The majority of Americans agree on the need to secure our borders and to remove immigrants that are breaking the law and are burdening our systems," Vice Mayor Porras told The Floridian. "Passing the Venezuelan Adjustment Act would help fix temporary solutions like TPS by providing law abiding Venezuelans already in the U.S. a path to permanent residency," she added.

Representative Vern Buchanan (R-FL) is introducing legislation to immediately deport and prevent the reentry of illegal aliens involved in criminal gangs.

In addition to these provisions, the Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act denies illegal aliens found to be members of criminal gangs the right to asylum, temporary protected status (TPS), and special immigrant juvenile status, as current law cannot deport gang members until they commit an independent crime.

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recorded over 17,000 arrests of aliens with criminal convictions in Fiscal Year 2024, while Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested just under 6,000 gang members in Fiscal Year 2018.

To an extent, Rep. Buchanan's bill builds upon the Laken Riley Act, which immediately deports illegal immigrants who have been arrested for shoplifting, assault against police officers, and crimes that result in death or serious bodily injury that President Donald Trump signed into law at the end of January.

In his press release, the Florida Congressman said, "Violent criminal illegals have no place in our country," condemning the Biden Administration's lax border policies for the deaths of Laken Riley, Jocelyn Nungaray, and other victims of illegal alien violent crime.

"If the Biden administration had been doing its job, Laken Riley, Jocelyn Nungaray, and countless others murdered by criminal illegals would still be alive. Congress needs to pass my Criminal Alien Gang Member Removal Act to make sure violent criminal illegals are immediately deported and never allowed to enter our country again," Buchanan declared.

Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua has been a prominent example of illegal alien gang activity in the United States in recent months, with members known to take over several apartment buildings in Aurora, Colorado.

"It's like an invasion from within, and we're going to have the largest deportation in the history of our country, and we're going to start with Springfield and Aurora," President Trump said on the campaign trail in October while also referencing the controversy surrounding Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio for supposedly eating pets.

Colombian President Caves After Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Illegal Immigration

Colombia's Socialist President Gustavo Petro felt the wrath of the new American administration this past weekend, when President Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs against his country for refusing to allow a couple of U.S. planes full of Colombian illegal aliens to land.

Upon the refusal to repatriate the illegal aliens back to Colombia, President Trump threatened Colombia with tariffs, causing Petro to buckle and bend the knee, allowing all Colombians in the U.S., who get deported, to reenter the country.

“We have overcome the impasse with the United States government,” stated Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo. “We will continue to receive Colombians who return as deportees, guaranteeing them decent conditions as citizens subject to rights.”

In a press release, White House Press Secretary Karoline Kleavitt said that the South American country “agreed to all of President Trump’s terms”, including “unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia."

Even as Colombia agreed to the Trump administration's terms, those tariffs and sanctions will sit in waiting and ready to be implemented, if Colombia renege on the agreement.

Meanwhile, President Trump enjoyed golf at his Doral hotel in Miami.

WASHINGTON—Representative Mike Haridopolos (R-FL) said he is "absolutely okay" with President Trump's designation of the Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and discussed other border policies in a recent interview with The Floridian, saying "that we need to send a clear message that we respect our own sovereignty."

President Trump has expressed support for the use of military force to combat the cartels since April 2023, telling Breitbart News, "This is an invasion of our country - this isn't just people walking over."

Rep. Haridopolos shared the same sentiment in his comments to us, saying the cartels "have declared war on the United States in so many ways," referencing their trafficking of the notoriously deadly fentanyl into the country along with their human trafficking atrocities and facilitating the entry of other violent criminals such as MS-13 from El Salvador and Tren de Aragua from Venezuela.

"It is a de facto invasion, and clearly, the Biden Administration just turned a blind eye to it," Rep. Haridopolos continued.

As a result, the Florida Congressman said that military force to fight the cartels is a demonstration of how "we need to send a clear message that we respect our own sovereignty [and] we have a border. Without a border, we have no sovereignty. And clearly, these folks have taken advantage of the system."

Even outside of the criminal element taking advantage of lax border policies, Haridopolos also pointed to the economic strain of supporting mass illegal immigration, referencing how uncompensated healthcare for illegal aliens has cost the state of Florida over $500 million, according to the Foreign Desk and Daily Signal.

"That is one of the reasons why we are seeing so much, not only inflation in general, but at medical facilities, because eventually someone has to pay for that, and that means if you have private insurance, you are going to be paying more and more because you have to cover what the government has failed," Haridopolos concluded.

FIU Director Pens 'America-First Sanctions Policy' for Venezuela https://floridianpress.com/2024/12/fiu-director-pens-america-first-sanctions-policy-for-venezuela/ Thu, 19 Dec 2024 23:00:16 +0000 https://floridianpress.com/?p=68941 Nicolas Maduro VenezuelaWhereas the first Trump Administration sought a “Maximum Pressure” approach with sweeping sanctions, Fonseca proposes that the incoming Trump Administration should enact an “America-first sanctions policy.”

The post FIU Director Pens 'America-First Sanctions Policy' for Venezuela appeared first on The Floridian.

]]>

Brian Fonseca, the director of Florida International University’s Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy, has facilitated a series of FIU panels to explore the political tension in Venezuela as well as the country’s relationship with the United States.

In his new policy position paper titled Strategic Engagement in Venezuela: Advancing U.S. Interests Under an America-First Agenda, Fonseca proposes that President-elect Donald Trump (R) significantly change his approach to Venezuela. Whereas the first Trump Administration sought a “Maximum Pressure” approach with sweeping sanctions, Fonseca proposes that the incoming Trump Administration should enact an “America-first sanctions policy.”

In Fonseca's proposal, he posits that he prioritizes “targeted sanctions, strategic economic engagement, and enhanced diplomatic efforts to stabilize Venezuela, foster regional stability, combat corruption, and reinforce U.S. influence”, adding that “any engagement should be predicated on Venezuela releasing illegal detainees and accepting deportations back to the country.”

Venezuela currently does not accept deportation flights from the U.S.

Deportations have been a divisive topic in the final days of the Biden Administration as President-elect Trump has vowed to carry out “mass deportations” once he steps into office. In a recent press conference at Mar-a-Lago, the president-elect commented on deporting Tren de Aragua gang members back to Venezuela, threatening the country with economic consequences.

“They’re going to take them back. They’re all taking them back. Yep, and if they don’t, they’ll be met with very harshly, economically,” the president-elect commented. “They’ll all take them back. You know, Venezuela and other countries were not behaving very well with us during Biden’s Administration, and within 24 hours, they were behaving well,” the president-elect added.

Fonseca argues that the "maximum pressure" approach mixed with the Biden Administration’s policy shortcomings have further complicated Venezuela’s economic and humanitarian crisis, which has only pushed to further embrace the United States’ adversaries like China, Russia, and Iran.

By enacting an “America-first sanctions policy,” the Trump Administration would maintain “targeted sanctions paired with a return to the enforcement of secondary measures that will benefit U.S. businesses and allies while restricting America’s adversaries.”

For example, by granting specific licenses for U.S. companies in sectors like oil and gas would “secure affordable energy imports, complement U.S. production, and curb inflation.” According to Fonseca, the Biden Administration rightfully integrated this effort into its policy post-General License (GL) 44, but the administration failed to strategically leverage it.

If the incoming Trump Administration follows suit, the effort would “include regulatory measures that ensure direct economic benefits for the U.S. while also acquiring strategic leverage on the ground,” and it would “stabilize Venezuela’s economy, reduce migration pressures, and address immediate humanitarian needs through U.S.-led frameworks promoting financial transparency.”

When compared to the economic sanctions that were placed on Venezuela in the past, they “inadvertently strengthened the influence of strategic competitors such as China, Russia, and Iran in Venezuela’s energy sector while exacerbating the country’s economic collapse.”

Ultimately, Fonseca suggests that the new approach's framework should include “stabilizing Venezuela’s economy to reduce migration pressures,” “reasserting U.S. influence in Venezuela’s energy sector,” “strengthening regional stability while countering adversarial influence,” and “promoting democratic governance and human rights through direct engagement.”

On January 10th, Venezuela will inaugurate its next president, which will likely be Nicolas Maduro despite Eduardo Gonzalez Urrutia affirming that he will be traveling to Venezuela to take the leadership post he won earlier this year. On January 20th, the United States will follow by inaugurating President-elect Trump as the 47th president of the country.

Fonseca stresses that the "America-First sanctions policy" can only work if Venezuela releases illegal detainees in the country as well as accepting deportations. "To ensure a sustainable and inclusive approach, the U.S. should maintain active engagement with Venezuela's opposition, civil society, and diaspora, reinforcing a broad coalition for democratic change," Fonseca writes in the policy paper. If both countries don't have a working relationship, "Retaliatory actions by adversarial nations, such as China or Russia, could deepen their toes with Venezuela, undermining U.S. objective," he wrote.

Despite foreign policy experts warning that President-elect Trump is “unpredictable,” Fonseca believes that if the incoming president focuses on retaining sanctions and increasing the issue of specific licenses, enforcing secondary sanctions, mandating financial oversight, achieving tariff-like policy outcomes, prioritizing economic stabilization and migration mitigation, facilitating energy exports, prioritizing debt control and asset privatization, negotiating debt control, and reopening the American embassy, the “America-first sanctions policy” will yield more successful results than the “Maximum Pressure” approach did during the first Trump presidency.

Rep. Matt Gaetz: "While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle, thus I'll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General."

Rep. Anna Paulina Luna: "Marn'i Washington has revealed names and claims she is being used as a scapegoat. This abhorrent behavior from FEMA will NOT be excused, and we need to look into the potential of criminal charges. American lives were put at risk, and we must hold those involved fully accountable."

FL Rep. Anna Eskamani: "This is great news but the ethics report should still be released & he resigned from the *current* Congress not the future Congress… feel free to fact-check me on this but he might be able to still return to Congress. Individuals with ties to Tren de Aragua, a violent gang hailing from Venezuela, are spreading across the United States. In a recent report, a man with alleged ties to the gang was arrested on Friday in South Florida. With incidents involving Tren de Aragua making headlines across the country, Florida and Texas are making efforts to curb any influence the gang could develop.

Last Friday, officers arrested a man with ties to the gang after an incident that took place at Dolphin Mall.

A man approached an off-duty officer at the mall, telling him that three men wanted to attack him. When the officer further investigated the matter, the man in question pushed the officer and ran away according to a report. Though he attempted to enter a car, another officer tased him, which led to the arrest.

Officers investigated the man’s belongings, finding two Nike bags with merchandise amounting to over $1,100 with no receipts.

According to the police, the man in custody has a tattoo that identifies him as a member of the street gang, and he had previously been in Chicago with an ankle monitor that had been issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, but the man removed it and moved to South Florida.

The arrest comes at a time when reports indicate that members of the gang are recruiting children from migrant families.

According to a report from CBS News, the gang is recruiting children who live in migrant shelters, and the members have since begun to blend in with asylum seekers who arrived in New York in 2022.

Responding to the report, Florida Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R) blamed the incumbent president, writing that "this chaos is the result of Biden's reckless border policies" and calling on lawmakers to "rid our communities of this threat."

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) has similarly addressed the "growing threat" that Tren de Aragua poses on the Lone Star state. Calling Texas a "law and order state," he affirmed that law enforcement will have the necessary tools to combat the gang at every turn.

The Mexican drug cartels and other criminal organizations, such as Venezuela's Tren de Aragua, are making hefty profits off of the border crisis, which Representative Kat Cammack (R-FL) discussed in a recent appearance on Fox News's Faulkner Focus, calling it "a cash cow" and deriding soft-on-crime policies in American cities where the gangs operate almost with impunity.

Host Harris Faulkner began by asking how many potential members of Tren de Aragua have flown into the country under the Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela (CHNV) parole program due to inadequate vetting, which Rep. Cammack said needs to be discovered because "[the Department of Homeland Security (DHS)] has been unwilling to come forward and be transparent with Congress."

"So we certainly know TDA will have members that have been flown into the United States at taxpayers' expense. But here is a disturbing trend: for the nine times that I have been at the Southwest border, I can tell you, talking with agents and with people at the border myself, these individuals are paying the cartels to come here, and the ones that pay subsidize the efforts of the drug trafficking and the sex trafficking," Rep. Cammack added.

More dangerously, the Florida Congresswoman noted, is how the volume of people crossing the border under the Biden-Harris Administration's policies has allowed the cartels to control the drug trade into the United States more directly without "subcontracting" American gangs to do the dirty work for them.

"That speaks volumes about how much of a cash cow the Biden-Harris illegal open border really is to the cartels and to the gangs," Cammack continued.

Faulkner then asked if DHS would "wait for them to just declare war all out on our soil" before anything happened, which the Florida Congresswoman said was effectively happening already.

"Why wouldn't they when there are no repercussions or consequences for their actions?" Cammack replied, "That is why they are operating in a lot of states that have no cash bail. They are going to places that they know they will not be harassed by law enforcement, where they are weak on crime, soft on crime."

The solution, Cammack concluded, was "one: to enforce the laws on the books that we already have. Two: to get rid of the Soros policies in place, and then there have to be consequences, we need the deportations. We need to get these people out of the country, people that should have never been here in the first place. There is a long list of things that we have to do, but the catch and release policy is literally killing Americans."

DeSantis, Rubio, and Scott Continue Hurricane Recovery Efforts

Clean-up as a result of Hurricane Milton making landfall continues in Central Florida. According to Governor Ron DeSantis, an “all hands on deck” effort continues as local and state government agencies continue to help Floridians recover from the storm.

Taking time off from setting up speed traps and hitting drivers with step speeding tickets (they also protect our highways), the Florida Highway Patrol has also rolled up its sleeves to help.

“We have all hands on deck to assist with debris cleanup in an unprecedented effort of the state to step into a responsibility that traditionally lies at the local level. We’ve even got our Florida Highway Patrol stepping up to the plate,” stated Gov. DeSantis.

On the federal level, Sens. Rick Scott and Marco Rubio have introduced legislation to fund FEMA with $20 billion after embattled DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently said that the Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) was broke.

“Unfortunately, this is a hurricane season no one will soon forget. The Disaster Relief Fund (DRF) is the front line for states, and our constituents, to receive support in the aftermath of natural disasters,” said Sen. Rubio. “While assessments of the full extent of these storms are underway, the DRF cannot be allowed to be depleted…” READ MORE

Gov. DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis will be in Tampa today and will hold another hurricane relief press conference.

Florida's Storm Recovery Team's 'Wonder Woman'

She has been criticized by Democrats and some Republicans as being too "right-wing," with some of those same Republicans rooting for her defeat in the upcoming November general election, but Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R) has shut down the contrarian talking heads by tackling the ongoing Hurricane Milton recovery efforts.

Even before Milton made landfall, Rep. Luna was neck-deep in Hurricane Helene's recovery efforts.

Rep. Luna has even taken President Joe Biden's call (Kamala hasn't dropped a dime that we know of) and surveyed areas impacted by the storm with the President, Rep. Kathy Castor (D)., and Senator Rick Scott (R).

"Today, I joined @POTUS@FEMA_Deanne, and @SenRickScott

in St. Pete Beach to assess Hurricane Milton and Helene's impact. I discussed increasing NFIP coverage limits with @POTUSand thanked him for FEMA's assistance. Together, we’ll ensure every American gets the help they need," stated Luna on social media.

Luna has also stood alongside Governor Ron DeSantis during a recent briefing in her district.

Ron DeSantis-SeaPort Manatee is Southwest Florida’s primary deep-water port and an essential link in our supply chain. Though the port sustained serious damage from Hurricane Milton, we’ve worked with the port to resume partial operations. Still, SeaPort Manatee must be completely repaired and restored to full operating capacity. Necessities like fuel, produce, appliances, and construction materials come through this port—and Floridians rebuilding from major hurricanes need these goods now more than ever.

That’s why I have awarded $9.5 million in state funding for SeaPort Manatee to make a full recovery following Hurricane Milton. These funds will support:

Emergency berth repairs and dredging in state waters,

Immediate security needs and access control, and

Plans to harden port infrastructure ahead of potential future storms.

I’ve also directed state agencies to assist the port with expedited permitting and additional personnel, and I’ve directed the Florida national guard to help rebuild the perimeter fence.

Hurricane Milton Recovery Efforts Continue

After Hurricane Milton made landfall in Sarasota County last week, Gov. Ron DeSantis had his boots on the ground surveying the damage. This was expected.

Gov. DeSantis also visited other affected areas like Tampa and St. Petersburg. And while his press conferences briefed Floridians about how to cope in the storm's aftermath, one politician was missing from the usual political backdrops of every press conference.

DeSantis is hands down, the best wartime/natural disaster governor in Florida's history.

State Senator Joe Gruters, who has been targeted by DeSantis' executive office for endorsing President Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primary race, and who is backing the pro-pot ballot initiative, was absent from DeSantis's Sarasota County presser.

"Sarasota County was where Hurricane Milton made landfall. Here and in other storm-affected areas, the state is operating PODs like this one at New College of Florida to help families in need," said DeSantis on social media.

Where was Joe?

Is it that bad between Gruters and DeSantis?

During the governor's last visit to St. Petersburg after Hurricane Helene passed through a couple of weeks back, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R), who also endorsed Trump, was with DeSantis during his walk-through in the area.

So, the love lost (if there is one) may not be so much politically motivated (yet it usually always is)

Is there any way DeSantis and Gruters can just hug it out and put their differences behind them?

Several other state lawmakers have also expressed their issues with the executive office. This bad blood running within the Republican ranks of the Florida Legislature could make for a very colorful legislative session.
